The elections are Municipal elections. so sort of like local elections. Not the sort of thing that would get this kind of reaction, that would normally come before a general election.

The world is simmering!!!

I am in Barcelona. The elections are REGIONAL as well as municipal. The presidency of the government is up for grabs. The "manifestions" are mainly unemployed youth who want to see a change in government leadership. Hope they get better "change" than the US did...............

I do not want a hyped up response full of pro-revolution unrealistic rhetoric I want to know the facts. Are we looking at a possible revolution here?

What I know so far is that the Central Electoral Board was able to get these protests banned but the cops have refused to disperse the crowd. They are only supposed to last until the 22nd when the elections occur, correct?

The fact is a firm NO. This is no sort of revolution. The political parties are helping to organize the appearance of the crowds. These gatherings have been going on since the 15th. People are blowing this WAY out of whack without knowing anything about it.

Everyone will be partying elsewhere on the 23rd.

I can tell this much, there are no political parties behind this, hard times and bad, corrupt politics result in this!
Same thing over here.

No parties, unless you really want to think there are any.

It's people afraid of the future, for their sons and grandsons.
And fear is a powerful WMD, it destroys society from the inside it corrodes and break the social tissue.

Some videos from earlier this week - this is a national protest and people movement against the Banksters and corrupted politicians!

And it's not organised by any political groups or unions - they are not allowed to participate - this is the outrage from real people who are fed up with all this crap of corruption from the Banksters and their marionette politicians!

First of all, I think you are fearmongering this issue. True that people are concerned about the unemployment rate, but come on - how many people in the world can think past the concern for their own derrier? Europeans as a whole don't have the same wiring that Americans do. If they really wanted to do something about the unemployment they would simplify the labor laws and make it easier for a person to be self employed. The paperwork and red tape for the simplest things are an absolute nightmare.

I LIVE in this society. Those same folks that you see on gathered in Puerta del Sol will be gathered somewhere else next week. Maybe in much smaller herds, but nonetheless, they'll be hanging out somewhere else having a good time. This is Spain, and that's what life is all about.

Believe me, they are in the woodwork. That's what makes them "corrupt"............;-) The PP (Partido Popular) is trying to oust the ruling Socialist Party. Just like the US, everyone is sick of both of them (the left and the right).And peaceful protests are a far cry from revolution.

If this is authentic, it could be regarded as just another mass-protest in Europe against the so called "elite", the so called "banksters", the so called "Internationalists" etc..

This has been going on for a while now, but the governments refuse to listen, the problem though it, that they can justify their deaf ears unlike dictators, they can say if you don't like it vote in the next election.

That is a big glitch in Democracy which needs to be fixed.

That the only real war that exists is between the haves and the have nots ? Americans will be the last to rise up.
The couch, the T.V. plumming and a warm bed. where you can believe in your safety for one more night ? Is appealing.

I may be wrong , but I would argue that the masses in both the US and the UK are not ready for any type of revolution. I think a lot has to do with the age demographics. Where there have been revolutions, it has been in countries with a high percentage of young people. Both the US and UK are aging societies, once people get past their 30's their appetite for social unrest will reduce as other responsibilities like family take over. Most people are comfortable with their lives.
I mean I could take a walk down any British high street this Saturday and you wont see the signs of a recession, you will see busy shops and restaurants, despite what is happening economically going shopping on a saturday has almost taken over as the British religion. Then its back home for saturday night TV. There is no appetite for a revolution here.
Maybe if things start to effect the middle classes more, things may change, but I doubt it. People will still go to the shops on Saturday, just not buy as much or just window shop and look at things they cant afford.
