'Prophet' faces fine for quake warning

www.iol.co.za

Taipei - Taiwanese authorities have threatened to fine a self-proclaimed prophet unless he removes remarks from his blog predicting an “apocalyptic quake” that triggered panic preparations among numerous followers.

Lin Yeu-woo, a weather bureau spokesman, said: “Issuing unauthorised forecasts on earthquakes is punishable by a fine of up to Tw$1 million

Dozens of Taiwanese have reportedly rushed to prepare makeshift shelters in central Taiwan after the man, known only as “Teacher Wang”, alleged that a huge earthquake and tsunami would destroy the island in May.

About 170 shelters converted from cargo containers are currently being built in Puli, Nantou county, after Wang wrote on his blog that millions of people would die when the disasters strike on May 11.

Well at least someone is putting a stop to all the fear mongering, but then again what about freedom of speech

I guess a lot of people must be on edge at the moment with all the major events happening around the world, they might believe just about anything at this point in time. Guess most of them would rather be safe than sorry

Did the guy above me say he hopes this comes to America? Obviously not thinking before speaking...

Yeah you have the crazy, or truly sincere people trying to make predictions. Even more trying to make money off it. But, that's the cost of the complexities of freedom. Don't trade it for the simplicity of rules and regulations, please.

Or you think every scientist is goverment cover up agent.Nobody can predict exact time , location and strentgh of quakes till now ,especially not some blogger who thinks he is a God and scaring ordinary people and messing up with their lifes.Just hit them in the pocket .

Freedom of speech is not a bad thing and should not be taken away... but then again there are to many sheeple in this world to go around fear mongering. A line has to be drawn somewhere

Who's says they are fear mongering, whether their prediction turns out right or wrong? Noone can make you fear except for yourself and how you choose to react to the prediction. Better still, just turn the channel, hit the back button, or otherwise read something bloody else. How hard can it be to choose not to digest any unwanted information.

Free speech is only free to those who agree with the speech being freely said.

So you dont mind that dozens of sheeple are falling for this and buying shelters converted from cargo containers on the hill sides, what if they were your family and friends spending their life savings or retirement funds?

What dictionaries say about scam: 3. A confidence trick, confidence game, or con for short (also known as a scam) is an attempt to intentionally mislead a person or persons (known as the mark) usually with the goal of financial or other gain. The confidence trickster, con man, scam artist or con artist often works with an accomplice called the shill, who tries to encourage the mark by pretending to believe the trickster.

if you uproot your entire life and evacuate your city based on the "predictions" or a "prophet" then you are a fool and deserve any inconvenience that comes your way. i'm so sick and tired of people wanting to government to come in and save them. you obviously realize that these types aren't reliable sources of information, so if you're not going to be duped by people like this, why do we need laws to discourage them? can't we just all agree that you're nuts if you listen to prophets? arbitrary, reactionary rules which don't serve the greater good or eliminate some present and pressing problem are what has made our nation so bloated and diseased. last i checked, false prophets weren't about to tear society down in a fit of panic.

so right. why do we just accept the idea that people are all gullible and sheepish? so some idiots somewhere listened to a false prophet? why should that affect laws that their country has, let alone our laws a half a world away? if people get fooled by con men and doom sayers, then they deserve whatever they get. no one forces you to believe anything anyone says, you must make your own decisions.

and where does it stop? if the weather man says it's going to rain and you cancel your golf game, should he be fined if it turns out to be a beautiful, sunny day? bottom line; you choose to believe or not believe everything you hear. take personal responsibility instead of punishing the wicked or misguided for your own naive ignorance.

No-one is forcing anybody else to take heed of their predictions or prophecies. It is someone's personal choice if they wish to follow the words of a ''prophet'', and consequently, there is no need for mollycoddling legislation to prevent people from doing so.

Although, it has to be said that ''Teacher Wang'' appears to be quite an apt name.

With freedom comes responsibility. We have the right to say or believe anything we wish, but only if we are prepared to face up to the consequences. Rather than fine people for making prophecies and predictions, people should be fined for making prophecies and predictions that don't come true. They can be charged for all the expenses occurred due to hoarding, traffic congestion, etc, and tried for all the suicides and mercy killings resulting from the panic they caused. That just might make YouTube go dark. (Except for piano playing cats and Lady Gaga lip syncing.)

You are sitting in the dark in a theater...
waiting for the movie to start
and someone yells:
FIRE!!!!

Of course if the quake happens there won't be anyone to collect the fine...

where would this leave NOAH?

ahahahahahaha not ANOTHER crazy lunatic using 2012 as a way to gain fame and fortune.

This Taiwanese guy sounds so much like the fraudsters Duke Puntalingit who has made numerous date predictions for quakes in the Phillipines - he is currently predicting the outbreak of ww3 any day now.

There is also JNSR who claims that Jesus has told her that aliens will come and that they are the ones who will perform the 'rapture' spoken of in the bible.

Those of us old enough will remember the Jehovah's witnesses thinking the world was going to end in 1973 (?), Y2k, The grand alignment of 2001 etc etc and are all a bit sick and tired of people putting expiry dates on our planet.

However, all crazy people and their fate datery aside, 2010 and the first 100 days of 2011 have been absolutely astounding in terms of the sheer number and scale of natural disasters. I would say to anyone sane minded person, have a look and a read at some of the stuff out there. Instantly dismiss anything that has a date attached to it, cos you just know that it is gonna be wrong.

But I think that most people will agree so far anyway, that if you really open your eyes and have a look around the world at the moment there are some undertones of all of these 2012 / Nibiru brown dwarf thingy / pole shift / book of revelations apocalypse etc etc that seem to be playing out. Things are different this time - once in 100 year and once in 1000 year disasters seem to happening an awful lot at the moment. I am sure it is not senility setting in, but I thought 100 year disasters happened well once in 100 years, not a few months after the last once in 100 year disaster.

It could all be a big coincidence and things might start to settle down very soon. (hoping so) But what, just what if there is an element of truth to some of it?

Freedom of speech means freedom from scientists dictating the narrative, or anyone else for that matter...

What freedom of speech? Inciting panic is not covered under free speech.
