A U.S. investigation of fast-food burrito chain Chipotle for hiring illegal immigrants has widened with federal prosecutors joining immigration officials in the case, the company said Wednesday.
Former workers have told Reuters that Chipotle Mexican Grill [CMG 277.30 -10.80 (-3.75%) ] — one of the highest-profile employers to fall under the scrutiny of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — ignored signs that pointed to the illegal status of some of its workers.
"It shows that the Obama administration is not willing to turn a blind eye to enforcement," said Mark Jones, a political science professor at Rice University. "The use of undocumented immigrants as a source of inexpensive labor is getting more risky."
