Alright all of you southerners need to quit kidding yourselves. I am from Florida, where I only seen racism in the country parts. My family is all from North Western Alabama, straight up back woods. I visit there every summer. My grandfather is a womanizer, every man they know is a womanizing cheat. They hate queers, African Americans. They had a sign at the entrance of their town that said "Raw Hide" and "keep the bla bla Nig g bla bla's out. Don't get me wrong, but them people are hateful. I was called a queer because my hair is alittle bit longer on top. Its wild out there and they are racists.

I think assuming that is a southern only thing is crazy. I've seen the same thing in small towns in California. Let me repeat: In the liberal Capitol of the United States there are whole towns where if you aren't a white straight anglo redneck you will get run out or worse.

This has to do with levels of education and not association with the Confederacy.

Over the years, as I grew older, I came to realize the south was still bitter about the Civil War. I was young and naive and never picked up on it but as time went on, it became apparent. The sad part is, I've always been a huge southern rock fan and loved the south. I liked most of the people and never viewed them any differently than anybody else. Unfortunately, these numbers don't surprise me at all. Lets face it, my father and grandfather didn't fight in the Civil War. Neither did my great-grandfather, therefore I don't see myself as part of the "victors". I just happened to be born in Michigan.

well.....

I originally came from a tiny rural town in upstate new York.

I moved to Tallahassee to attend college there at FSU. I soon discovered a term that southern people used, "DAMM YANKEE"! I also found out Who these disliked people were. they are *not* every person from the North.

a Damm Yankee is someone, usually from a large northern city, who is "in your face" obnoxious, and he will tell you how to live your life *his* way! Then try to force you to do it "for your own good", often quoting his university education versus your 9th grade education and your use of bad grammar and bad political attitudes!
Then he calls you a "redneck", with the Implication that you contribute nothing to anyone, that whatever you believe in is wrong and needs to Come Around to.....[usually his own belief system!]
these DYs are always in a hurry and get on ya if you do not also be in a hurry with them.

As the years went by and more and more Northern people moved to Tallahassee and long long after the blacks got their rights, here and there, i see these DYs.
Meet them. They make me feel like I am "an American Indian and they are the New White Man"!

[little feelings: they have no "oil" in their engine, everything is square on the corners and they have little "roundness" to them or in their souls. Thus they have no feel as to what their Policy will do to the village/classroom/employees, or to you personally.]

in college 1961, I had to ride back from the caving expedition, the 90 miles, with a Connecticut man who drove a Cadillac. He did not like the South. he pulled up behind an old pickup truck and then pulled sharply around it, cutting off the farmer with his two sons, in it. a couple of miles down the road this Conn. man pulls into a convenience store to buy something and as he came back to the car this pickup truck came slowly into the parking lot. the farmer slowly got out and walked up to the open window and began to sharply talk to the driver, "how could you pull around me like that; me with my two kids, do not do this again"! he drives off; i sunk down in my side of the seat. So what did this Conn. guy then do? for the next 80 miles he "machine gun mouthed" nonstop, putting down this stupid farmer and the South and all of the rednecks. every tree and post and house got his negative comments!!

I had as a college room mate who was from also a city in upstate new York. he and his other northern friends bullied and tormented me endlessly! And what was his major? psychology!! He was going to be a counselor of people's problems!!

the next county over from Tallahassee is very very rural. there, when the schools are yearly graded and they get a "D" grade, they clap for joy as now the school is doing much better than last year!!
But I know a Secret about these rural counties, people! What Counts for the Most, there, is how much you love others and how much others love you. I once saw a poster for the church fish fry, there, in the county seat.
It said, "fish fry. you all come"! This poster was on a power pole a mile from the church. there was no place, time, or date, given. These informations are not important here!
[infuriates a Yankee.]

the Bible speaks about how Love is greater than Mind. I agree.

lets not even write about the "war after the war", the Occupation, the carpet baggers! Thus Northern Occupation went on for years after the war.

southerners:
--have you ever worked with a Boss from Up North who was from a huge city? many of these bosses are bosses from hell. some of them value Time, speed, money, pickyness, over all. For many of these people, the south is a territory in need of being Set Right!!

so there. I need not rant about blacks or the civil war, just have me describe some experiences with a Mindset
of some northerners.

Well it doesn't exactly mean that they're racist or whatnot, it just means they're supportive of how strong the South was to separate from the US prior to the Civil War.

I thought it would be more than 4 out of 10, that seems low. The northern federal aggressors wanted to take away states rights and have been doing it ever since. Washington knew what was best for everyone then and still does that's the reason everything is great.

It's going to be abused either way. You can't control that, or convince the people living off of it with any good reasons that will make all of them stop. The worse it's abused, the quicker (hopefully) someone will realize it's broken and needs to be done away with or replaced. I don't think welfare spending itself is a huge issue though compared to what else your federal government is spending your taxes on, including bonuses for bank CEOs and all of that crap. The entire federal government itself needs to be overhauled as far as I'm concerned.

It's just depressing, is all. It's not like the South was embarrassed by the actual combat. The lopsidedness of how industry vs. agriculture had developed just afforded the North a much better economic and manufacturing situation. The colonies that originally entered this union upon peaceful agreement were guaranteed the right to peacefully withdraw as well, and that was even taught at West Point.

personally, I have been to the south many times and for extended periods as well and lived in the mid west. St Louis, the south sucks just as much as the mid-west, some great people mind you generous and friendly and all, but when my wife was driving home from work one day, it dawned on me how racist the center section of our country is, my wife BTW was giving a co worker a ride home he is a Black American, i was in the back seat with the kid. most of the drive we couldn't go more than a block or two without angry sneers and outright yelling "stay with your kind" etc.

So keep the south its all your thank you very much, where do I sign the papers saying I as an American agree if they dont want to be part of the USA fine GTFO!

Missouri (St. Louis), was also part of the Confederacy. The few years that I happened to live in Iowa, I was bewildered to hear locals refer to Missourians as "Southerners."

First off... The war WAS NOT about slavery! Not even a little bit!

Secondly the supposed "hero" in the entire drama (lincoln... no I won't capitalize his name as he doesn't deserve it) was the purveyor of the FIRST patriot act, otherwise known as the sedition act... Lincoln was a bigot through and through who only made the emancipation proclamation out of sheer desperation.

The civil war was about states rights pure and simple.... anyone trying to tell you different has an AGENDA.

edit to add: It is telling how "siding with the confederacy" is tantamount to being a "racist" or wanting to "own slaves" in the mind of most. Speaking as someone who has family who owned a plantation in virginia I have a couple things to say:

1. The narrative that is now being applied to slavery is in most regards a blatant fabrication! I have read the family plantation journals (which were meant to be a sort of guidebook of best practices for the next generation to use when their parents died, usually fairly young) when I compare what i read there and in other HISTORIES it doesn't add up to what pop culture tries to portray.

2. slavery was ONLY a southern thing... helpful hint here many of our ancestors came over as indentured servants. which was SLAVERY plain and simple.

The civil war was not about slavery, and those that sympathize with the confederacy/south are not "racists". The civil war was wholly caused by business interests that were locked out of the south's economic windfall by family run farms, plantations, etc agitating to set the events in motion that led to the civil war in order to gain control of the crops that they were buying at rates they didnt want to pay to make into goods in their factories.

Also... people should look into the carpet baggers that flooded south post war and took over land working the former owners to death alongside their former slaves on tiny share cropping lots. Anyone who has read the history and really GETS what they are reading gets an uneasy feeling that the civil war has DIRECT EFFECTS on the battles we are fighting today 150 years later!

It was the beginning of the federalist iron fist, as well as the beginning of government looking after the interests of a FEW big businesses over the wellbeing of the MANY citizens of this nation. It is sad how many do not realize the south was not a bunch of evil black hating rednecks.

You're right on everything. If I had taken the poll, being from the deep South with ancestors who fought for the Confederacy (and even received pensions), I'd "side with the South." The federal government/corporate cabal we have running the show today is the same one that invaded the South and began chipping away at the Constitution.

Welfare is not no. It's the principle of it that is the problem. Theres no place for welfare in a capitalist economy. Sorry but humans are still animals and socialism just does not fit with us. Because we are animals competition and survival of the fittest is needed for growth, motivation, and independence. Look at the animals that we domesticate for instance. Dogs especially and not those small pocket dogs that are in existence completely because of inbreeding. If dogs hadnt been domesticated then they would still be hunting their food and what not. But the second you take them in and give them food and what not they also get lazy. Its the same principles as in human beings. If you give someone handouts like that and "domesticate" them then why the hell are they going to have the motivation to go out and get an education or a job? Its absurd to think that they will. And Obama is up there like wtf? Why aren't these people working? Hmm maybe because you've stolen their motivation you piece of s###. Its kind of funny that you know thats what everyone is thinking but no one will say it because its "politically incorrect" to say that people without jobs or an education and living for free have no motivation. Yes it would be amazing to have a society in which this didn't happen and I wish that were true. But people who listen to anything the dems stand for or have to say are idiots. Sorry, they never ever know what they are talking about.

On a further note

1) this conversation seems to have drifted completely away from the topic.
2) The previous posters that are still saying yes it was about slavery need to go back and check out what other people have posted.
3) I still cannot figure out what racism in modern times has anything to do with the civil war and slavery and how people thought 150 years ago. It has to do with the fact that idiot and ignorant white liberals feel bad for what their ancestors did and tell all not white people that they are sorry and try to glorify who they are because of what their ancestors went through. And so they get hand outs which take away from the working people. Yes many do rise up and realize what is happening to the ones around them and leave. But the ones who dont are a downright disgrace to what was once a great country and it is the governments fault. And then the governments media depicts them in exactly this way and helpless and in need while it demonizes all white people. So hmm I wonder why there is racism still? What the hell kind of pseudo-logic do these people use? Sorry, all of this is completely ridiculous and its getting on my nerves for one, and although I am not one, it is completely legal to be a bigot.

The Southern-sympathizers in this thread are the perfect example of why Eugenics was thought to be necessary; ignorance seems to be an heritable condition.

As bad as they may seem now, just think how ignorant and dim-witted the south would be without the sterilization campaigns of the first phase of the eugenicist project. The second phase involved southern land-grant colleges, which selected the cream of southern society and served as a marriage market, pre-selected for intelligence.

It is only a matter of time before another sterilization/culling becomes necessary, from the eugenicist POV, I'm afraid.

Sigh. See what I mean? Malformed sentences, and an extreme ignorance, combined with self a self-righteous streak that is unique to the below-the-bible-belt culture.

It doesn't matter what percentage of people believed what - just read your history - the Civil War was all about slavery and the rights of southern states to continue the practice. There are literally hundreds of letters, books, speeches, debates and editorials all written from the time period that attest to the slavery issue and the split it caused in this country.Somedays I think maybe Lincoln was wrong - he should have just let the South go

This seriously made me laugh. I am sorry. I typed that in pure frustration. I was not too worried about sentence structure. But, now that you have apparently made this an intelligence debate, I would like to know what exactly you are talking about, and who you are characterizing. Southerners lack intelligence? Well, that is just pure ignorance impressed upon asinine individuals by a form of quasi-intellectual, nefarious, mainstream propaganda which you have proven dominates you. I am, however, ecstatic that the masochistic vessels dared to disseminate such vicious assault on the "mentally deprived, inbred southerners." Feel free to try again.
