First Image Ever Obtained from Mercury Orbit At 5:20 am EDT on Mar. 29, 2011, MESSENGER captured this historic image of Mercury. This image is the first ever obtained from a spacecraft in orbit about the Solar System's innermost planet. Over the subsequent six hours, MESSENGER acquired an additional 363 images before downlinking some of the data to Earth. The MESSENGER team is currently looking over the newly returned data, which are still continuing to come down.

Why don't the show us color images......

I don't see any bases yet.

I thought this was an interesting piece of history.

Enjoy.

Black and white images have a better contrast ratio than colour and sometimes the REG/GREEN/BLUE are sampled separately in black and white and then processed together to create a colour composite, we might still get colour images after NASA has done the composites.

how much you wanna bet that thats a pic of the moon... they are probably just saying its mercury lol. "keep it black n white, they'll never know lol"

seems like something they'd do.

Ok. That makes sense.

I was thinking it might be the size of the data packets being sent or something. I am sure they have some high bandwidth on those tin cans.

Mercury has got to be the most boring planet in the Solar system!

I wonder if one day we'll ever need to mine the other planets for things?

Maybe? Maybe not?

the greatest planet in the whole galaxy..WOW.
A GEMINIS HOME.
Gemini has been closely associated with the planet Mercury and is considered to be ruled by it.

that is not mercury
its the moon and u wanna know why
because if it was mercury they would show the whole thing u never see
a picture of venus or pluto up close like that because it cost money to send them things out into space
and i dont think they want it getting caught in its gravity and crashing on the planet it would swing right past and into the beyond
hav a look at other pictures of mercury sumthing dont seem right ?

The craft is in more danger of the sun's gravity than Mercury's. Mercury rotates slower than it orbits, a single day on Mercury lasts exactly two Mercury years, or about 176 Earth days. It varies in distance from the sun ranging from 46 to 70 million kilometers. Numerical simulations show that a resonant orbital interaction with Jupiter may cause the eccentricity of Mercury's orbit to increase to the point where the planet may collide with Venus within the next five billion years.

That would make it a much more exciting planet in our solar system then.

Mercury sucks. He's like the guy that wears a white t shirt and jeans to work every day without fail. The most boring planet in the solar system and definitely never invited to parties.
