Whenever my wife pointed out this article to me, I was furious that anyone would order someone to literally suffocate their own child to death. Noone can imagine that America's healthcare system would come to death panels, but this situation illustrates exactly how letting a government body decide healthcare issues is a horrible idea.

Whatever My government run healthcare works just fine, thank you. Look at your source. You are judging based on a news outlet and not from first-hand experience. The article seems fishy to begin with. By the way, 'your' government is already a socialism/capitalism hybrid even before Obama enacted your HC Bill.

To name just a few. And to anyone who says, "Yeah, and look how great those programs are working..." BAD MANAGEMENT doesn't mean the programs, themselves, are bad. It just means poor management

My only concern is about how a judge can order that this childs vent be taken out... That is suffocation pure and simple... Who cares about my source... If that was your son would you be hailing how great your system is? Or would you fight to give YOUR child every chance at recovery regardless of how slim a chance the government believes it to be?

Translation: the hospital will determine if enough money can be made from this case to justify inserting this boy into the capitalistic US disease-management system.

I've never quite understood why the uproar over a government making these kinds of decisions and the complete lack of uproar over letting a private, for-profit corporation make these exact same kind of decisions.

The order to take off of vent has already been given, the parents and hospital are putting it off to try to get child moved to America for specialized treatment.

I saw this story (live) as well. The dad also mentioned in the interview a desire to bring the child home to die, and they were (allegedly) told they were not allowed to do so.

It's a scary thing indeed when choices like these are removed from the parents and granted to the government. I feel great sympathy for this family, as no parent should ever have to bury their child.

It says it would take a 'miracle'. Anotherwords, there is basically no chance for the little one to make it. This is sad, but this is life. Death is a part of life.

What would I do if it was my son? I honestly cannot say. However, for you to judge socialism because of a case is ignorant. Don't get me wrong, it's sad about the little boy, but, is that fair to judge? How do you know that because of their socialized medicine they were able to find out the boy had the neurological disorder? How many children in the States are not diagnosed because of lack of HC? I imagine lots. Furthermore, eventually cases like this will appear in which nothing can be done. So, does the whole suffer because of a couple of cases? I don't think they should.

I hope I am not coming off as insensitive, that's not my intent.

Absolutely! Having lost a child myself, I would fear anyone or anything that attempted to take the wellbeing of my remaining child out of my hands. I specifically did not knock Canada's health care system, because I am not clear on all points. That is the reason I phrased my post the way I did. Clearly the courts intervened and that is all I commented upon.
