I don't blame them.....

There's plenty on those plate tectonics of the Pacific and Indo-Australian plates that run through NZ's South and North Islands; unfortunately there's more of these earthquakes coming

The Seismologists have said they reckon this Quake was on a new Faultline, previously unknown.

News reporting now city have run out of ambulances. City people are using their 4 Wheel Drives to help Hospitals get people into central city.

My friend is kinda keeping me updated and was telling me that alot of people are trapped in flattened buses and cars. It's terrible. Reminds me so much of the Loma-Prieta quake in 1989 though because that's how alot of people were killed during it. Ugh, this is just freaking terrible. I feel like crying.

Im sure NZ will definatly need help after this. The City is basically reduced to rubble in the centre of town. I dont know how people will begin to function, businesses function etc.....

Its a mess. The house is shaking as I type.

Unreal,

just saw footage on local news of Sumner Beach area.

For those not from here. Sumner is a lovely beach town just outside Christchurch. It has huge cliffs on one side and at the bottom are houses , then the beach.

There have been rockfalls and a hostel was crushed by a massive boulder the size of a small bus. Reports of dead bodies being carried out.

Crazy footage.

One guy talked over the phone with CNN International and said that they were trapped in an office at the 12th floor? and that both their staircases in the building had completely collapsed.

I can only imagine the chaos and stress that you guys in Christchurch must be going through right now!

MASSIVE QUAKE – not necessarily in magnitude but destruction and acceleration of land speed. I have just been talking with my brother who said this was much, much worse than the original earth quake of 7.1 in September. He said that he watch a car full of people get crushed flat and a whole 7 story building drop down to ground floor. There were literally hundreds of people working in the building at the time. They are expecting hundreds if not thousands dead, and I’m not fear mongering – just being realistic. The liquefaction is apparently just phenomenal. The hard rock which is heavier than water forces the water up. There are reports of rivers running down the street, and houses sunk into their land. There are fires raging in the city and suburbs and they are pulling body after body from the local YHA hostal, which was full of back packers at the time of the quake. There have been reports of 5+ magnitude aftershocks. Many of the building collapsed because of cracks which still existed from the previous big quake. This is New Zealand worst ever natural disaster...

Just tragic.

And something to think about...why did god destroy the beautiful garden city of Christchurch. The city was named in respect to the lord....

Crazy another one, didn't feel a thing in Nelson. So are these all pre shocks?? They were talking to a seismologist on national radio a couple of weeks ago who said that all the quakes so far including the 7.1 were pre shocks and that a 8 to 9 magnitude is expected.
Man it looks way! worse than the first one from the news footage.

I hope thats not true for all our sakes here in NZ.

The news footage now is consisting of live rescue attempts. some amazing rescues have already taken place, but efforts will continue throughout the night to try and save people trapped. Its currently 5pm here, dark around 8.30pm.

I have a bad feeling there will be at least hundreds of deaths in this awful quake.

www.google.nz have setup a people finder to help families be reunited.

Huge problem for emergency services because they dont know how many people were actually in their work buildings due to the quake happening at many peoples lunch time.

Worst suburbs seem to be New Brighton, Central City and Lyttleton (epicenter)

NZ Blood service are urging people to donate blood, they are desperate.

Unbelieveable - is there another written source from the seismologist saying this?
For those of you who have earthquake knowledge please let us know what you
think re this report.
An 8 or 9 - where was the last report of a quake this large in a populated area?

The images and audio coming out of Christchurch are just shocking. It is a city spread out rather than up, and yes it has a lot of brick and stone buildings, and yet some recently built buildings have completely collapsed. This is in a country where earthquake proof building is the standard for modern construction. This was a violent quake.

The fact it happened at 1pm when many were inside buildings, and generally in the city centre eating their lunch just adds to horror. It is a real shocker. Stand strong Kiwis.

In a rather odd coincidence as it happens the fourth NZ partnership forum of the NZUS council was taking place in Christchurch at this very time. Present are the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Cambell, and the Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Mariko Silver together with eight serving Congressmen and representatives of significant US corporations Boeing, Time Warner, and Kraft Foods.

The woman in charge of US security, US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Nepolitano was also scheduled to attend, but luckily for her she chose to pull out of her scheduled visit just days ago.

The topics for discussion at the meeting were counter-terrorism, border security, and amongst other matters, disaster relief!

An 8 or 9 has been expected for some time, but on the major Alpine Fault, not on lesser fault lines.

I really think the seismologists dont know themselves whats going on here around Christchurch. The Sep 2010 quake brought attention to a new fault line.

Todays Quake has brought yet more attention, to a new fault line also.

Where next?
