China says anti-pornography campaign shut down 60,000 websites

www.cnn.com

The government launched a special campaign a year ago to rid the internet of pornographic and vulgar content, Xinhua reported.

Overall, the campaign included 2,197 criminal cases involving 4,965 people who violated Chinese law by disseminating pornography via the internet or mobile phones, the news agency said. Of those, 58 people received prison sentences exceeding five years, the report said.

I think this is something people need to be aware of. If you think things are bad where you are at now, if you are in a free nation you should take heed to what is happening in China. As is stated above fifty eight people have been sent to prison for more then five years. It does not say how long the other two thousand and some people were in prison. It goes on to say that people are also paid to turn in others for any sort of pornographic material. If you think things are bad now, you should look to what China has become and make sure where ever you live does not become like China.

The over population in china with there not being enough women
I would find it hard (no pun intended) not more people are in jail over there.
That is a real police state in china.

Porn might not be the greatest thing to spend all your off time
watching but for it to be a crime punishable by jail..
Seems a bit crazy.

Thecinic
thanks for posting

Yes it does seem a bit harsh. The whole point is the people should know that this can be done through data mining. China has made it work for them not just in the porn field. Anything the government does not want them to see on the web they just block it. This is just one of those areas that people need to stand up for because they could loose it.

Although I am very much against their measurements for anti-porn, I am actually more concerned abou "vulgar" content.
What porn is, is subjective...some say hardcore triple X stuff, other say playboy is porn..
But vulgar...now that is very open to interpretation...no matter what your doing or saying, someone somewhere will find it vulgar.

China sucks.
God bless the west, porn and all.

Out of the 60,000 site shut down I wonder how many were in fact not porn sites. I find to hard to believe that all 60,000 sites were porn sites. Now I know there are millions and millions of porn web sites but I still wonder how many non-porn sites got shut down.

60k huh...?

That's it? I woulda thought a few more zero's would be in order. I will now add 'prudes' to the bigoted description I now have in my head about the Chinese...

Oh wait...

Maybe that's just what they want me to think. I get it.

Oh wait... (again)

Are you a paid shill for the Chinese? You're here trying to make them look good after the whole 'bunny crushing' fiasco aren't you...? See, I've got this conspiracy thing figured out now. You'll never get to me! I'll be a bigot until the day I die.! (I'm American after all.)

Well of course! It's a very leftist government over there. Letting the public see that some men are bigger than others is politically incorrect and might make some men feel bad! Can't have that in utopia.

Hello fixer1967, I contacted my brother and father in China to answer your question, They refered me to this website ( in English ) for you to read that might help you.
www.chinadaily.com.cn...

Here is an statement from the article: More than 15,000 pornographic websites, of which 11,000 were operated through mobile phones, were shut down last year, the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) said yesterday.
Mao Xiamao, director of the GAPP department that fights illegal and banned publications, said that about 90 percent of pornographic websites in China use foreign servers, "mostly based in the United States".
Mao's department shut down another 136,000 non-registered websites and more than 1.5 million pieces of "bad information" were deleted from the Internet last year.

You might also find this interesting: According to the Supreme People's Court (SPC), courts across the country heard 1,273 cases related to the publishing of pornographic content, with 1,580 people convicted for making profits out of producing and spreading pornography from January to October 2009. Those convicted face jail terms of up to 10 years.

AND: www.sify.com...
Statement from article: Beijing is of the view that smutty and lewd content is threatening the emotional health of Chinese children.

I'm happy to read they are now sending these people to prison now, instead of them becoming instant Organ Donors after the trial.
My birth country is still rule by Communism,,, You must try and remember this, Freedom is not a word we in China use everyday to explain our way of living.
Of-course, I'm an American now and Very Proud.
Happy New Year Everyone and remember,,, This is the year of the Rabbit,,,,, So Have Babies

Cool info...

What makes me concerned are the 1.5 million bit of "information" which were removed. What constitutes "information"?

I know in the US there are those who want to eradicate porn from the web and it always makes me nervous. Once the porn is removed, what else do you find objectionable which needs to be removed? Last time I checked, no one had a gun to my head making me look at it.

You shouldn't be linking to that kind of material Real or not. There are members who are a little young for that kind of graphic reality.

Just saying is all

So "that kind of materials " are not allowed in the so called "free" countries?
and then why blame China for forbidding "that kind of material " ?
