She just blew !!! Looks like the doom is back on, although we should wait for the DoD to comment just in case it is actually another optical illusion of a none existent air plane flying form nowhere to somewhere. Then again is might be Bin Laden smoking some kippers "Attack, Attack, Attack"

The current eruptions of Mount Merapi actually have been going on for awhile now and is above the 120 hour mark now. The eruptions are declining now, though the death tolls have reached 194 currently. Mount Merapi has erupted in the past numerous times, so it is not too alarming that this active volcano would erupt, and most likely will erupt again sometime in the future. Not alarming, but is sad to see that many die.

DOOM cancelled apparently. Not to worry though White House is working on some DOOM to keep up the feel good factor and start another persecution of some poor sod.

The most recent volcano eruption happened on Wednesday, just after midnight, stated an official from the Agency of Volcanology in Yogyakarta province. Rhe official said that the ashes were spreading in all directions up to 50 kilometres far. The number of victims increased to 191, and 598 people obtained serious injuries, National Agency for Disaster Management reported. The number of evacuated inhabitants was increased to more than 343,000, and agency for volcanology widened the zone of risk to 20 kilometres. The series of volcano eruptions, which has been erupting hot ashes up to 1,500 meters in height and day Wednesday, started on October 26.

Oh crap

For a while the webcam was not updating. Last image was stuck at 9:07:16.

The lastest image (10:58:17) sure seems pretty ominous to me and significantly worse that the previous image.

They say that in addition to ash from ongoing eruptions, Merapi is also emitting poisonous gas that has traveled at least 8 miles from the mountain’s peak.

Some personnel monitoring the eruption say they ran as fast as they could away from the mountain once they smelled an unpleasant odor around their post.

They told the ANTARA news service they also came across the dead bodies of cats, chickens and even flies they believe were killed by the gas.

I see a skull in the smoke. I see the jaw bone and teeth, the eye sockets, teeth and everything. It looks like a skull. Do you see it? It sort of looks like the bride of Frankenstein but also like a skull.

Not so fast. As another thread revealed, this has major potential to blow big and catastophic because it is storing three times the magma as Tambora. Don't cancel doom just yet.

I thought they evacuated everyone. Were the people who died stubborn ones who refused to leave (like the old dude when Mt ST Helens blew) or did they just not manage to get to everyone. Thats sad in either case. But, in the worlds most densly populated country the toll could have been many, many times higher so thank goodness it wasn't.

There have been earthquakes in Taupo, NZ too. When that baby went up it was one of the biggest eruptions in history. The scientists say the earthquakes are actually nothing to worry about but what if the lake is waking up? We are talking Yellowstone size blow.
