You won't be disappointed. I've had my Glock 30 for 5 years now and it's still my favorite. Mainly because I like the trigger pull on it compared to the other handguns I've shot.

It is pretty reliable as well. I love the Springfield 1911s but the magazine capacity leaves something to be desired.. and cleaning 50 parts after stripping it down gets old.

Glocks strip down quick. If you shoot a lot, you'll be happy it's so easy to clean.

The only downside that I see to a Glock is that they're kind of a fat gun. Which makes it more of a pain for concealed carry. But like you said, It's a perfect fit for my hand, which is a good trade off in my opinion.

Another thing I do not like about my glock is the polmer frame.
You ever get a hot round, your going to have one sore hand,
and a ruined gun. Consider getting a hand gun with all steel frame,
and a good safety.

Humor aside, I would want a gun that I would really love owning and shooting like the wilson 45 1911

This one I am not sure of the exact model, but a beautiful gun that you will adore owning and shooting.

Most people would run away rather than face down any of these, so concealment might not be an issue..

OMG I didn't think anyone would bring up Wilson Combat or Night Hawk Customs, they both make amazing pieces of art that function at a level that most other manufacturers try to mimic. I would have a Wilson Combat already if they weren't so pricey but don't get me wrong they are amazing, even for the money. Wilson also does a great job of tac'ing out 870s and I am bringing my 870 up there for some work very soon.

Now for the price range that the OP seems to be looking at I would have to hands down suggest the Springfield XD series, they are all great guns and are wholly reliable, and like has been mentioned before in this thread they are easier to break down than the Glocks, especially the XD(M). The XD is a little wide for some people to conceal but I feel if you take your time picking a holster it can be easily concealable and comfortable, I have never have a problem with mine, even with a cheap WRB inside the waistband holster. For a first carry gun I highly recommend a semi auto, most states when you take a CCW course if you shoot the training course with a revolver that is all you can carry. I do highly suggest getting a good revolver as a backup gun, they are very easy to conceal in ankle rigs and very reliable. You can pick up a Rossi or Taurus modeled after a J frame for less than $300 brand new, I got my Rossi used but only shot a few times (original buyer bought it from a pawn/ gun shop that I frequent and realized he couldn't spare the money right then and pawned it 2 days later at the same shop he bought it from then never got it back, I caught it the day after it came off pawn for $220 with them covering sales tax and throwing in a nice 25 box of +P semi jacketed hollow points. I to this day have never had a problem with that gun and has been the best bang for the buck that I've gotten.

it all depends of the application its being used for but for home defence i would suggest hk .40, 1911 .45, but the sig sauer p226 .40 is what i own. i had a .357 revolver and that was my other favorite. anything above .40 is what you need.

No.

Someone breaks in here threatening me or mine and they are going out feet first under a sheet. No remorse, no hesitation, some people need to be killed.

Ah that’s right lets treat violence with violence.

You mean to say if I came round to your house and threatened to kick the (four letter word) out of you, you would shoot me. Nice one, I would hate to live in a society where violence was always the answer to all problems.

mmmm.....sweet delicious irony....perfect timing too, I just finished my lunch and this made wonderful desert!

OP, any mid- or compact-size Glock will be highly reliable, decently concealable, and cost effective. You really can't go wrong, unless for some reason the Glock grip design just doesn't cut it for you. People with chubby, sausage fingers sometimes don't like the finger grooves in the Glock grips.

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure I would hate to have you for a neighbor. I live in Florida and unlike the socialist craphole you live in we are allowed to defend ourselves. Violence is certainly not the answer to all problems but it is the answer to some. You have to understand that there are people who have chosen to live outside the law. Violence is their way of life and if you have something they want they don't hesitate to use violence to take it from you. The level of violence demonstrated by the criminal class has been escalating in the last 20 or 30 years. At one time if you complied and caused no trouble during a robbery you had a good chance of living through the incident. The new breed of barbaric little thugs will shoot you just because they can or simply want to watch you die. These actions increase their prestige among their thug gangbanger peers. I'm almost 60 years old, overweight, and have a bad heart. I'm not going hands on with some feral 20 something punk because you think it's the right thing to do.

check out marshall and sanow. i would have to say .357 mag revolver with 4 inch barrel. Remington semi-jacketed hollow-points. best performing out of that study.

I would take any of the Marshall and Sanow "database" results with a huge grain of salt as they have been demonstrated to have irrevocable discrepancies.

Quote from article-

  • * Marshall & Sanow have claimed to have continuously collected their "data base" of shootings over time; this makes having fewer shootings in particular caliber and load combinations at later dates impossible, but eight such conditions exist in their "data base."

    * Marshall & Sanow have eight particular caliber and load combinations that show a completely impossible greater than 100% "one-shot stop" percentages in their "data base."

Even if you believe Marshall and Sanow there are many state of the art hollow point rounds with 500-600 ft lbs of energy for the .40S&W and .45ACP. And both .40 and .45 carry more rounds in the magazine ready to go than a revolver.

I may be too late, but I would go with the Taurus 1911DT.. Google it for reviews to see for yourself. If you go to a site with an expert review they will compare it with high end spring fields and colts. In fact this 1911 at the price has more options than 1911s 300 dollars more.

There is about a 50 round shoot in period apparently, but afterward it's match grade accuracy.

I like the H&K Custom Combat in .40s&w. If I were you tho I would go for something in the $500~ range but I would stick with the .40 calibre. I know that a lot of the military types prefer ye ole .45 acp or even the nato 9mm and most think of the .40 as a cop calibre but I feel that the 40 is the best of both. Nearly the capacity of the 9mm with double stack mags with the same ballistics as the .45 (given that force = mass x acceleration and what you give up on mass in the 40 you make up in velocity....but that doesnt work for the smaller 9mm. The 9mm is more tractable (read accurate) as it has less recoil and the .45 seems less accurate for the same but opposite reason.
Look at a FN, Springfield Armory. Glock or even a Taurus but make sure that you take a safety course first (especially if you choose one that has one of those double trigger type safeties like a Glock). Go with the high cap mags and add night sights and select hollow point ammunition for better stopping power. If you ever have a life threatening encounter like a home invasion call 911 first and then warn the bad guys that a) you have called the police and b) that you are armed and will shoot if necessary, Be confident-not scared like a deer in the headlights and they will likely flee. If they dont bug out then consider that they, too, are armed and mean you harm so be prepared to take a life but dont think of it like that (paradoxically)...think of it as saving a life - yours.

What's with all the hi-point hate? I'm lucky enough now to be a proud owner of an ed brown custom 1911 but a few years ago all I could afford was a hipoint C9 and once your comfortable with it its pretty good. Just load it with 7 rounds instead. An inexpensive gun is better than no gun.

As to what is good for a first handgun and to be used for defense?
Id say the springfield xd 9. Cheap ammo and not hard on the hands like the .45

And to the "violence begets violence" guy, well that leaves one less violent person now doesn't it? And what the hell are you doing posting in weapons?

I have Always carried a M1911 in 45ACP. It's a little heavy than the plastic gun's but. I see that as a bonus. Most like the Colt Commander size to carry. I personally like the full size model. the round was designed to have a 5 inch barrel. I recommend either the Springfield or the Kimber. The pistol has a 100 years of combat experience. Its hard to argue with that. In my opinion. It's the best round in an automatic that gives a one shot stop with out precise round placement. Rock Island makes one for like 375. The Sig P6 would be my second choice. However that's a 9 MM. Which will easily do the job and has less recoil.I always go with Military weapons. See they have done more studying on the subject than you ever could. That's my 2 cents.
