I went to browse ATS this morning and looked at a thread by Zorgon. I wasn't at my main computer so wasn't logged in, hence I got to see this advert.

This is what I saw.

I was just wondering what the community's opinion was on the Church of Scientology recruiting on ATS.

If this had occurred in a thread the thread would be closed and the poster banned because the T&Cs forbid recruitment.

Does ATS have an official policy on this or is this just a case where an advert slipped through the net?

Good question mate.

I get all these pop up ads, ranging from Russian brides looking for husbands, to palmreading layouts.

I have not seen the scientology one. My opinion, no problem with it. Just don't join them.

You may want to change your browsing tendencies if that is the case.

I believe you are delivered ads which are suited to your browsing patterns?

I don't think ATS had much to do with the actual Scientology ad.

Most of my browsing is at ATS in the Aliens & UFOs forum, as was the post I visited.

I agree that ATS aren't the ones supplying the adverts. I was just wondering if they were happy with this particular advert being shown on their site or whether they have any say at all in which adverts get served.

Scientology is just.. wrong... just a joke.. even more so than the 2000 year old story tale "Christianity"

I agree that any kind of recruitment to anything should not be allowed even in ads. If anything, you can send a suggestion under tools, or send a complaint and let the mods/owners know.

I agree, this is not on! I'm sure management will do something to remedy this. They have in the past.

This is not just ATS, don't think they have any control over it, Skeptic Overlord I think addressed this issue. I ordered something from Pottery Barn last evening and later went to My Yahoo page and there was an advert for them, I don't pay any attention to it.

I don't see what is so wrong with this advertisement. There are numerous of ad's on ATS.

I understand Ats needs to make money to keep it running, but I don't like what some are advertising.

Like the Scientology for one, a brain washing cult obviously out to gain more members here on ATS?

Not good.

Well, I have my personal opinions about Scientology but I don't seek to impose those on others. What I thought I'd highlight is the discrepancy between the T&Cs which ban recruitment and having adverts on the site which achieve the same thing.

If it was me I'd ban all adverts but I'm realistic enough to know ATS have to make money somehow. However, there should be some editorial control over what adverts get used and in fact there is which is why we don't see adverts for pornography, for example, on ATS.

MOST of the ads you see on ATS are specific to your browser history - a few of the top of page banners are seen by all ATS members - but the rest are targeted " from a " pool " of hundreds of adverts

this is the way a lot of internet adverisimg works - google adsense is typical - and used by a large number of sites / forums

however the good news is that once a questionable ad shows up in the ATS pool - the amigoes have the clout to request that is removed - if they see fit

Already taken. Now politics and religion are two things people can easily get angry over. It's just fun to jump in!

My take? If this was the Roman Catholic Church or the Episcopals advertising, this place would be burning down. Scientology classifies itself as a church and it should be treated as such. I'm just seeing more hypocrisy... you don't view it as threatening so why bother right? Kind of like Mormonism or Hinduism?

I agree. What's wrong with it? If it works for some then, big deal. At least they recognize alien existence. And as far as I know, this particular religion has never evoked any world-wide wars either.

It's odd, the ones that are MOST accepted, embraced and practiced are the ones causing MOST of these bloody wars!
I say bring on alien religion. Hell, I say we start an ATS religion too!

Really?

I don't see that logic.

If I called myself a police officer would that make me one?
No.
