I think we know too little of physics when it comes to space, our knowledge of space is so limited that its hard to conclude that there simply is no way for an advanced species to visit us. Einstain talked about wormholes and science is proving that they are very possible. Even if light speed is impossible to acheive if you could create a wormhole and control where it leads you then the posibilities are endles as to where you could go in a short amount of time. But again, we dont know this as FACT, because of our limited knowledge of the universe and how it works.

Why is it that anyone would immediately assume intelligent life? The dinosaurs ruled earth for millions of years - man has only been around a few moments in comparison to the age of the earth.

I think it is certain that intelligent life exists outside of our planet - and it is almost as certain that some of that life is space faring - however the chances that the first earth type world we discover has intelligent life is fairly low.

Even if the evolution of intelligent life on an earth type world is 100% certain, then there is a fair chance that it will be either not yet evolved, or already extinct when we discover that world - come back when you have a list of around 500,000 earth type worlds - then I would be betting you might hit an ET civilization.

The inability of the "believer" to grasp such a simple concept is very revealing.
There are two questions here;
1: Is there life elsewhere in the universe?
It's highly likely, but not known at this time as fact.

2: Is intelligent life visiting Earth?
There is far more evidence against than for, such as physics, the vast distances of space, REAL science.
There is NO factual basis to believe they are visiting, and it's highly unlikley they are.

Simple.
But "believers", since they base their conclusions on belief rather than knowledge, merge the two questions into one.
This lack of comprehension of such a simple distinction certainly casts, uh, doubts, on the believers ability to understand more complex concepts.
There is a huge amount of ignorance concerning science FACT on this thread, and ATS. Seem's the believers soak up science fiction, and show little interest in science fact. Hint. Science fiction is, uh, FICTION!

edit on 30-9-2010 by OldDragger because: (no reason given)

Rather than failing to grasp this distinction, it may be that some are simply taking the increasing abundance of evidence for #1 as also increasing the odds for #2. Essentially, the more evidence for life on other worlds, intelligent or not, this also increases the chances that there have been some intelligent beings out there who have (unlike us, who have maybe had less time or less drive to focus on it) worked toward interstellar travel and have worked through the logistical difficulties to accomplish it.

Yes, given what we know about physics and given the vast distances of space, there is a lot to overcome. But I'm not going to come down for certain on the side of it being completely impossible to achieve. Unlikely, sure, but not impossible. What we as a species haven't yet figured out how to do, others might have.Hopefully one day we will also advance to the point of being able to feasibly achieve interstellar travel.

Just a note about science fiction--what distinguishes it from fantasy is that it's based on our understanding of science fact and theory, whether or not we have the technological means at the time to put theory into practice. Basically, science fiction tends to avoid straying from what is theoretically possible.

good point, but it would still be mindblowning to find a planet with primitive life. A jungle planted teething with all kinds of alien animals.

Actually its huge step forward to confirm theories of how planets form, and also increase the odds of 'life as we know it' being found, let alone 'life as we dont know it' now here's the proof that your only job on this forum is to play down ANYTHING which will move the UFO debate forward, of life out there. I would personally love to come over to your house and see your pathetic little face (joking!) when they announce some major discovery of life..but I got a feeling you wont be there, you will be silent and hiding...

First off, the scientist that gave the OP an overly sensational and ignorant thread title didn't make this statement as a scientist. He made it on personal feelings, beliefs and desires.

There is not a scientist on the planet that would make that statement based on the currently available information. We do not yet have the capabilities to come to any conclusion regarding this, or any number of other planets out there. I know that sucks for some of you to hear, and some don't want to believe it because that makes their life boring or something.....but it is reality.

There is no reason to get excited about finding a planet in a habitable zone of any star. We all knew it was going to happen sooner or late with the shear rate of current planet discovery. So yeah, no big deal. The big deal comes when we develop better equipment and can get more detail. Then the fun begins.

LOL I cannot help but think the inhabitants of Gliese, with intelligence, are probably looking at our planet and saying " we have found a planet not far from our planet which can sustain life and proves life beyond our planet does exist". Theyre probably deducing what we would look like and sketching us as we do them. Probably visited by the same ETs, who are probably going back and forth and seeing the parallels and differences of both of our societies. I wonder if ETs can laugh and enjoy a joke? Well those "nano fossils" our scientists have found on a crashed meteorite has practically proven life exists beyond our planet. Let the fun times begin!

Here's another tip for you junior!
Reasearch doesn't mean surfing the web reading alien and UFO websites.
Look up "research", that would be a start!

From Wiki, regarding the message from Earth:

In October 2008, members of the networking website Bebo beamed A Message From Earth, a high-power transmission at Gliese 581 c, using the RT-70 radio telescope belonging to the National Space Agency of Ukraine. This transmission is due to arrive in the Gliese 581 system's vicinity by the year 2029; the earliest possible arrival for a response, should there be one, would be in 2049.[24]

This is the greatest story since we landed on the moon. Disclosure is imminent with the UN and Vatican onboard, is it time to re-evaluate your skepticism to realign yourself with the present reality??

First, skeptics believe that aliens exist on other planets. When it comes to them visiting Earth, the notion of such interaction is our main point of argument.

Second, disclosure is becoming the modern version of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf". If believers keep using the phrase over and over, it will eventually lose all meaning.

Third, Catholicism has made some adjustments over the past two years. Church of England has celebrated and accepted Darwinism. Vatican in Rome has accepted the possibility behind the existence of another alien species.

Even though there is a lot of space science being made, there is absolutely no connection between the news and disclosure. We live in a brand new millennium, and we are making some social and scientific adjustments. It is all being done in anticipation for things to come in the deep future. Not now.

That is completly illogical Captain.
It's fallacy. it's like saying you have a group of ten people, none of which have wings. You can increase your group to a million people and still, none of them will have wings.
Sure, there is much we don't know, but there is much we do know! This discovery is a good example. But to take a face value that it's even possible for any intelligent species to manipulate the Universe at will is far from a given! Anything else is speculation, far far removed from any reality we know.

How does a planet not rotate?

Is this possible or would it defy our understanding of physics?

Yes, it's possible, and we have examples of it in our solar system. Mercury doesn't rotate. It's 'tidally locked' to the sun because of how close it is to the sun, so that one side always faces the sun and the other side always is in darkness and faces away from the sun. Just like the moon is tidally locked to the earth so that the same side always faces us.

The fact remains, that regardless of what Life we may or may not find there.. It shows that there is a strong possibility that another planet could sustain our lives. There is a place out there, that could potentially develop life under the right circumstances and that just further increases the odds that an intelligent life form exists somewhere else in the vastness of space. Knowing those simple facts, could totally alter many belief systems and "awaken" many people. There are plenty of people out there that still want to believe we are the only thing alive in the Universe. That we are some special, unique, one time only event that will never occur again because "God" created us.

This discovery is of epic proportion because it challenges many ideas that humans still cling to. It is a stepping stone for greater things.

i dont know if id call this psyop or what to call it ,

we can bearly go to the moon, let alone drive around in space or our planet with ease ,

whats the point of these finds i ask ,
we´ve know from math alone that the possibility of planets and life out there is more then 12x12,

i mean its like a bad advert that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence
but we have no means of getting over the fence..

its like finding god but god couldent careless about the find,

cant remember who it was , could have been von braun , that the space race is lost ,
we started backwards with the whole thing and lost a ton of capital and resources
in the process , call it bad entropy ,

point is why advertise of planets when ours is dying and we cant get the ëll of it cause we dont have the means or the ships.

then again it could be that the masses are kept blind and we have the means and ships..

Regardless of ET's/Aliens being there or not it's still nice to know there is another planet in the Goldy-lox Zone. This is a planet, that if has water on it (which is heavily probable) would be able to sustain life - as I said regardless if there is life on there already (which would be awesome no doubt) it's a planet we could live on one day.

Very cool either way. I am already buying up acres on this planet, they're only 30cents an acre so far so why not?

Hey old timer, we dont need to go to libraries like back in the 30's in order to research, we can use the internet to research, the internet is like an online library. Amazing isnt it !!

In egyptian history they always speak of Sirius and Orion .....I wonder if the scientist ever pointed their attention into that direction to see if there is a planet suitable for life...?

Wanna bet?

This thread will fade into obscurity. No disclosure is going to happen, no aliens are here. Nothing is what will happen.
Bet on it.
You seem so sure! Are you an insider? Can you back up your claim? Or is that just your belief? Your contradiction is funny
