SOCASTEE - A student is in custody while a resource officer recovers from an afternoon shooting at Socastee High School Tuesday.

According to Horry School District Public Information Officer Teal Britton, the shooting happened about 2:00 p.m.

This is the second school shooting in our area this year. Earlier another school officer was forced to shoot (and kill) a student who stabbed him in another area school. Seems our schools are getting dangerous everyday and I think thats just pitiful.
Perhaps the solution begins at home? I personally think it starts at the breakfast table but there are other aspects involved also. One thing I do know is that Horry county schools do have letal detectors installed but are often turned off due to complacent attitudes and the mindset that "it won't happen here".

Maybe after this second shooting Horry county will open its eyes & mind and make an effort to instil better security measures. The SC Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is landing at the scene now to investigate the shooting. Hwy. 707 is shut down at this moment in both directions but should be open within the hour.

The Fraternal order of Police for Coastal Carolina’s website featured officer Karney this past summer.

It showcased an event that he and Officer Marcus Rhodes were instrumental in coordinating. They helped organize the 2010 Special Olympics Torch Run on April 7. The run started at Ripley’s Aquarium and ended at Socastee High School.

Officer Rhodes is the school resource officer for Carolina Forest High School and was involved in a student altercation last school year. On Oct. 16, 2009, Trevor Varinecz, a CFHS student, used a knife to stab Rhodes multiple times. Rhodes shot the student in self-defense and the student died.

WOW! Second school shooting this year, plus a stabbing of the same officer in the same school last year! The officer shot and killed that student!

What the hell kind of school is this? Why is it still open? What kind of parent still lets their kids go there?

One was Carolina Forest and this is Socastee, two different schools but...Still!

There are also numerous incidents involving students that go unreported for the reason of negative publicity because this is a resort town (myrtle beach) and the politicos here do not want bad press, so most of what happens never makes the news. One only has to listen to a scanner to understand this fact. The majority of funds in this area goes directly to the beach towns for political favortism and tourism, so the rural areas where most students live have no activities for them tod o, there is no 4H or otherwise here.

UPDATE -

Bomb squad is on scene checking some packages that were deemed as suspicious. Metal detectors were turned off for some time for reasons yet unknown. The policeman and the student got into a fight and the student shot at him, the policeman was hit by what they said was shrapnel. Will update as needed.

UPDATE 2 -

Fire units are clear from scene. SLED is conducting investigation into events. All students have been picked up from local Taco Bell parking lot and school's stadium. Last word on student is that he has been taken to M.L. Brown Public Safety Building in Conway SC for interview and DJJ is also at ML Brown. DJJ is the Department of Juvenile Justice.
