PARIS (AP) - France has declared war on al-Qaida, and matched its fighting words with a first attack on a base camp of the terror network's North African branch, after the terror network killed a French aid worker it took hostage in April.
The declaration and attack marked a shift in strategy for France, usually discrete about its behind-the-scenes battle against terrorism.

"We are at war with al-Qaida," Prime Minister Francois Fillon said Tuesday, a day after President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the death of 78-year-old hostage Michel Germaneau.

Now this sounds serious, On Thursday, the French backed Mauritanian forces in attacking an al-Qaida camp. The U. S. has told France we will help any way we can.

I guess France as not actually decided how their going to proceed, but I'm hopeful they are swift and vengeful, That in my opinion is the only way to deal with a threat, Quickly, act now and take no prisoners.

I would also make it known that all of our ammo, large and small was dipped in the blood of pigs.

The last time France Declared War, They didn't do so good. Lets hope they've learned from the past.

The French learned from WW2 that you first have to declare war BEFORE you surrender.

Big deal, the French are finally at war. I'll sleep a hell of a lot safer tonite knowing this.

I won't, I'm sure as soon as it starts to go bad for them, It'll be our fault for what ever the reason.

The French language is the language of diplomacy...they're not allowed to declare war on principle!!!!!!!!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, But doesn't France have a large unemployed Muslim community that is rioting for one reason or another every other year.

Uganda called on African nations to fight Al Qaeda 2 days ago for the attack on the world cup fans.

I think, actually know, something major just occured and it will quickly spread from here.

I laugh at the French's actions during WWII too. That was what, 60 years ago? I can also recall the derision and scorn heaped upon them for not being able to control Vietnam. Look how well that worked out for the US. Oh yes, and how did Korea turn out? Or how about when the big bad US took on Grenada? Or Panama? Or T-72 laden Iraq? Maybe one day if we actually battle someone on par with the US in amount of $ spent on killing machines, we will be waving the white flag...oh, wait, we already did that it vietnam. And what will it be called when WE leave Iraq and Afghanistan? A success? Xenophobic much?

Oh now lets not be silly about this. The last time that France declared war, was 1991 in the Gulf war where they stood side by side with the US and UK (and others) and it went very well.

Let me say that the French Foreign Legion are specialist is desert warfare. and I assure if they have finally decided to get serious about this. then they will be a great help in this useless, and nonsensical pseudo religious crusade.

Seriously you all need to read some books and stop watching film. References to French occupation (not capitulation) in WWII is irrelevant. If it was not for the french resistance the like of operation overlord would not have gone head.

Let me also assure you, that you Americans here owe a damn sight more to the French than you like to believe.

One of my points I was trying to make is this.
With their large Muslim population in France and now they've declared war against the al-Qaida and assisted with the destruction of at least one training camp, aren't they inviting more unrest and riots and bombings from their Religion of Peace Muslims that populate their Country?

Just asking Because I wouldn't, Not unless they started to deport them.
