I'm not sure what that has to do with anything, but Earth has an atmosphere because gravity pulls the gases close to the planet. The further up you go, the less gas there is until you reach an amount that is unbreathable.

That's my reasoning at least. But, you can also go the "space monkeys" route. Whatever works for you.

I think the OP had a reasonable question and you mock them???

Way to go ATS members!!!

The OP is asking how early space pioneers knew there was no oxygen in space....
Do any of you enlightned members have an answer or just more comedy??

I am guessing they deduced it considering that oxygen thins as elevation increases.

Airplanes had instruments that detailed atmospheric pressure outside the plane as well.

Fair point. If this is a serious question, it deserves a serious answer: Earth holds its air to it with gravity. The higher you go, the less air there is. People learned this in the 1800s when people in balloons would come back dead from lack of air. Scientists studied this for over 100 years before NASA started making its plans.

No answers, But ZeroKnowledge is still really funny

I would just hope by the time they had the knowledge to go into space, they would have had an idea about air, or lack of it, out there
otherwise I really feel sorry for the first person out in space, and their family..

He's asking how we knew that space had no atmosphere.

I think? English may not be his first language?

My guess is probably because there is no sound in space.

Sound waves are transverse waves that travel through particles in the air. The sound waves cause those particles to vibrate and slam against one another. This is what causes the sounds you hear.

My guess would be, scientists saw that no sound could be heard in space, so I guess because of that, they came down to the conclusion that there was no air in space.

I think this is a very good question.

That's a popular theory but it's not a fact. Many scientists believe that space is not an empty vacuum but rather is it filled with quantum particles and dark matter.
www.fnal.gov...

This being the case, then why don't these particles transmit sound? We can see a light wave and easily measure it but we cannot see a sound wave. I propose there is something about sound wave mechanics that science is not taking into account and the reason we do not hear sound in the vacuum of space is due to other things.
