Of course most of us have quit TV because of Internet. Id like to hear from those who have quit both but dont think they will be logging on anytime soon.

YES.

For the most part I have quit TV. I am very picky at what I watch and when I do pick something I am very aware of the propaganda it wants us to see and what the shows agenda is. With that being said, I hardly ever watch TV anymore and I honestly feel great about it. In my opinion the future will NOT favor the way TV is setup right now. So future, hurry up and get here!

I hardly ever watch tv (except for movies!) but my fiancee loves his football and baseball so of course we MUST have the supreme package, along with two gigantic LCD's (he bought em, not me). He also plays his video games, which I have never gotten in to.

However I spend most of my (little) free time on the net, which probably isn't too much better than tv.

I'm proud to say that I've quit watching TV 6 years ago.
The internet made it possible. It pretty amazing because I was a TV junk! I don't miss it at all and when I visit someone who has it running, it almost hypnotizes and I noticed how it disturbs a good conversation.

TV is 100% Brainwash!

For those who have quit, is there ANY downside that you can think of?

I quit TV about 7-8 years ago... never looked back.

The *ONLY* downside now.... is when I go over to friends houses...

It's the Strangest most eerie thing.

As soon as the Television springs to life, I could see that it was MAGNETIC to their attention, it PULLED their attention towards it.

What was, only moments ago, a thriving conversation... had turned into 5 people staring at a screen. and me, watching them being transfixed.

It really Dawned upon me then, at that moment... exactly *WHAT* television *WAS*

You will see it too, if you stop watching television... you will be at a public place, enjoying the day, and you will see the zombiefication of your friends and family to this infernal device.

Something that you never quite noticed before, because you too were also in its Grasp.

It is somewhat disquieting.

I see a lot of like minded ATS'ers in this thread, .... that is nice to see

I've always had more interest in reading than in television, but ever since internet exists I really don't need television any more. If I feel I need to stay informed about something I will read up on it online. Other than that I read newspapers and truckloads of books (well as a matter of speaking of course..but I do read lots of books)

The television is still in the house and my partner still uses it, as do my kids every now and than. But I also noticed that they started to watch less frequent.

I don't say television is an evil thing or something like that. But I feel very strongly that I get bombarded with lots of info I don't need or want when I watch television. Commercials, side topics in talk shows, news and series etc etc. It's almost sensory disturbing.. (that makes me sound like I'm an old lady..while in fact I'm only 32 but I guess I just don't like to much noise and images)

Anyway...I love my television free life.. I wouldn't want to go back to watching tv..

Interesting thread. My TV recently stopped working, so i spent some days without watching any of it. I can't say that i missed it, but it's always nice to tune in when i'm alone in the house, and really...really...bored. I choose what to watch wisely and i know that i could spend years without TV...I can't say the same about computers, though.

The only TV we watch is the history channel, science channel, and home improvement type show. We stay away from network TV and don't watch much news. Personally, I can't handle the news. It's so much negativity compressed in a small amount of time. Worthless as far as I'm concerned. Usually, if I'm home alone during the day I won't turn the TV on at all. It's usually only after dinner that we watch TV for a couple hours and see what's on the science channel. We really enjoy the shows on the universe.

I really recognise this... When I talk to other people I always wait for them to look towards me before starting or continuing a conversation. It's something I think I was thought when I was young, look someone you are talking to in the eye..

But I can wait untill forever for people to watch me in the eye when talking while the "big grey eye" is switched on.

Quit TV? Nooooooooooooo!

The TV and the Computer are my lifelines.

TV comes on when I get up and goes off when I go to bed.

I am 57, live alone, and if I didn't have the TV noise and the computer I would go crazy, or at least crazier than I already am.

Always always tho, I check ATS for all the latest news before I even watch the TV news.

I quit in 1986 when i moved to Yosemite Natl Park to work for a summer.
I still keep up somewhat on the internet and other news sources..and when my group goes on a tour..i get caught up in about 20 minutes in the hotel room with the remote..it is fast how quick you can catch up...the TV is the contemporary campfire..(Sports are the modern day coliseum) except it does not allow your mind to wander. Not watching TV makes a lot more time to do creative things. Too much "interwebs" isn't much better for one's health either--- but at least there is choice involved other then which channel to digest. In retrospect i can't see spending 2-4 hours a day doing TV as a possibility and if it was I think I would feel to embarrassed by the habit.

Me and my family recently gave up TV three weeks ago. I find it very liberating. There are a few mindless reality shows that I was totally addicted too...but im really glad I gave them up.

My two year old is starting to learn to read through the "my baby can read" program and is doing well. He use to LOVE sesame street and now I cant even get him to watch it. It was the only progeam I didnt mind him watching because its educational and he learned his ABC's watching Elmo everyday. Now he doesnt even want to watch it anymore...Just his reading DVD.

With all the propaganda and mind control via television, its good to see more Americans are turning it off!

I see the TV just when The Simpsons or good old cartoon are up.

But, to say something, yes, I quit TV, a long time ago. I have not seen TV too much during my life, though. I suppose it is cause I had Internet when I was really small. This is the reason of how I learnt english as well..

I moderate TV and ATS topics, but I find ATS replacing it a lot even though it many times doesn't have much more quality content.

I very much like to watch Swedish Viasat channels which are very educational and broadcast rare and controversial documentaries which you'll never see on History, Discovery, Animal Planet etc.

What's addictive in ATS are misleading thread titles (about 30% of wasted time), quality content of course, and up-to-date topics..... I'd say 20% of time spend on ATS really contributes to me learning or understanding something new.

Na only one is that when i watch a world cup or something i may not know the players names and who they are, as i rarely watch footie nowadays.

I do not care for anything on tv, and i think there is no real downside, other than you need something else to do.

I quit the TV since summer of 1975. Watching TV affects my psyche very profoundly. It under mines my ability to think. I can see that it is in existence solely as a method by which certain "I own you" types are manipulating everyone into being their slave population. Almost as bad as if we are simply cattle on their ranch. I know that it sounds like I am being extreme. In deed I have been told by a psychiatrist that I am extreme in not having a TV. The doctor believes that my phobia [un-natural fear] towards TV is a form of mental illness. They even force me to take anti-psychotic medication, to try to get me to watch the TV again. As well as not wanting to watch TV I also avoid motor transportation. But that is not so much a psychological matter, but more because I suffer severe motion sickness. Nausea in my head and I usually faint. TV is the same effect on me, but is more subtle since obviously to watch TV I am sitting still. But what I detect from the TV is a psychic motion sickness. TV robs one of independent thinking ability. TV is literally a form of hypnosis going on.

The NAZI movement in 1930's Germany was very largely possible because Berlin had installed the worlds first TV service. The NAZI propaganda machine was obviously using radio to "educate" the population, but historians never seem to realise the degree to which Hitler was using TV in Berlin to "educate" the population. Other countries introduce TV only because they too would like to control our minds the same like as Hitler was doing. TV really is too much of an intrusion into the workings of the human psyche. I embrace the INTERNET, but I avoid TELEVISION. I listen to RADIO but do not want to watch TELEVISION.

Anyone thinking to embark on paranormal research will do well to avoid TV. This is because the TV creates images in the mind which you will later confuse with reality. Memory of reality ? Or memory of something that you watched on TV ? Dreams present us with subtle images which are destroyed when you wake up in the morning, but even more so destroyed when you watch TV. Especially as you get into old age you will not be able to differentiate between where the images in your memory originated.

The only TV programmes that I remember was back when it was a Black and White service. The programmes back then had strong atmosphere. Programmes were evenings only. The rest of the day was the test card with music. Good music. After the programmes for that evening the National Anthem was played "God save the Queen" and then the signal was switched off. On the old black and white TV sets when you turned it off, there was a white dot left in the centre of the screen, as the cathode ray tube cooled down. At weekend there was just sports and on sunday all the programmes were religious in nature. On thursday evenings we always tuned in to the BBC 1 service for the TOP OF THE POPS modern music. It was my favourite and my most true favourite was watching the original STAR TREK series. DOCTOR WHO made by the BBC was interesting, but nothing by comparison to the USA Paramount Pictures made STAR TREK series. I do go to the cinema very often, and I am avid about watching the DVD video of any films that do not get to be at the cinema.

Advertising on the TV is a serious issue with most people. Especially in the USA where the adverts come in every ten minutes. In the UK the BBC never transmit adverts. The BBC is completely clean. However, the other services are entirely adverts commercial funded, but the law controls how many, and for how long, and how often, the ITV and other non-license funded TV services are allowed to advertise. There is also the controversy about sex on TV. My opinion is that TV must never transmit sex. As far as I am concerned pornographic material must never ever be transmitted by the TV. There might be children watching it.
