Based on the information available my speculation would be that that the busted spy ring was after data concerning the maintenance and readiness of
the US Nuclear Weapons stockpiles and , any progress that is being made towards the creation of a bunker busting bomb meant for Iran's nuclear
Program . The other alternative is that they were sacrificial lambs designed to see how good US counter intel is .
