Clouds of oil have been found drifting underwater in the Gulf of Mexico as far as 142 miles from the wrecked Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, government officials said Tuesday.

At a briefing, Jane Lubchenko, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), said that tests conducted at three sites by a University of South Florida research vessel confirmed oil as far as 3,300 feet below the surface.

Well that's crazy!

142 miles, and that's just one of them.

On May 30, BP's CEO Tony Hayward denied the existence of oil plumes. "The oil is on the surface. It's very difficult for oil to stay in a column," he said. "It wants to go to the surface because of the difference in specific gravity."

Sure, cause the CEO of BP is now also a gravity expert and such..

This is getting bad, we have no idea what affect these plumes will have on the environment and how long they will actually travel through our oceans.

Thoughts?

I agree, he's a total idiot and now today he still says they aren't there, and that scientists are making this up.

Im surprised that this hasnt recieved more coverage and debate.
But then the reality I suppose, is that most new that the leak BP was showing was NOT the real one AND that it was very likley that there were several....

But 140+ miles away.. That is indeed quite shocking
