Isn't there a volcano nearby that has been pretty active lately? Or am I confusing this with a different active volcano?

WASHINGTON, May 27 (Reuters) - A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck 135 miles (217 km) northwest of Vanuatu in the south Pacific, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Thursday.

The quake struck at 1714 GMT, and was centered at a shallow depth of 12.4 miles (20 km).

USGS initially reported the quake at 7.5 magnitude.

Yes there are a number of volcanos i believe in the area,

Issue with this is that its pretty shallow which worries me a little.

Another quake ... Is it just me or does anybody else think that there are a bit to many natural disasters lately ? I know there are quakes all the time all over the world , but there seems to be alot of bigger quakes lately . Then we have volcano eruptions starting to get on the raise ... I mean with all that and the oil spill , all that is left for a good party is some huge tsunami or a meteor impact .

This are does get a higher number of quakes so it isn't that surprising its just a pretty big one that can cause a big issue if it puts out a tsunami.

I'm also a bit worried about the rebound or rubber band effects that we tend to see that will then cause another quake on the other side of the plate.

It has rugged terrain, reaching up to Mount Gharat (797 m), the peak of the active stratovolcano at the center of the island. The most recent eruption was in 2010. The volcano has a 6 x 9 km caldera, within which lies a crater lake known as Lake Letas, the largest lake in Vanuatu. To the east of the lake is Siri Waterfall (120 m drop).

Mount Gharat or Mount Garet (797 m) is the highest peak on the volcanic island of Gaua of the Banks Islands in northern Vanuatu. The peak is located at the centre of the island, is volcanically active and is surrounded by Lake Letas on all sides except southwest.

This is just getting weirder and weirder. And I know some ATS'ers don't believe the CME's from the sun have anything to do with EQ's, but I'm thinking that there must be some connection. At any rate, it's going to be a bumpy ride in 2010 looks like.

Thats good! Glad no real damage will be caused and nobody gets hurt, we have had enough of that for the year.

It looks like it was downgraded to a 7.4 also

Looks like 2010 is turning out to be the year of disasters. Volcano in iceland, and now a 2nd one predicted to blow, this possible tsunami, gulf oil disaster.... What the hell is next?

Downgraded further now to a 7.2 according to UGS,

Though just to note when things like this happen it can go up and down in its MAg for a good few hours,

I don't recall a 7.2 or 7 point anything causing a Tsunami on the other side of the Pacific?
You need an 8+ for a Pan-Oceanic Tsunami.
