Profanity and Censor Circumvention on the Rise

Staff have noticed an uptick in the use of profanity and censor circumvention recently. The circumvention is even worse than just typing the words the censor catches and replace with a '#'.

Neither way is acceptable to this website and needs to stop.

The Terms And Conditions Of Use are quite clear:

1b.) Profanity: You will not use profanity in our forums, and will neither post with language or content that is obscene, sexually oriented, or sexually suggestive nor link to sites that contain such content. You will also not use common alternative spellings or net-speak alternative for profane words.

Please consider holding off on these practices in the future.

Staff are concerned enough to begin handing out warn flags to long-term members and, after editing, adding the following to the posts of new members:

There is NO NEED for anyone to use foul language in making their point. It does nothing but degrade the post it is used in and censor circumvention is a slap in the face of the Terms and Conditions.

I also have seen the rise in the censoring circumvention as of late, so it's great that your making this point.

I agree there's no need to use any foul language to get your point accross.

I also can't abide some of the extremely nasty & distasteful comments that are posted, even when they do not contain circumvented profanity.

There have been some spectacular examples posted during the past few weeks.

It must be extremely difficult for the mods to keep on top of all such comments.

Therefore I urge all members to report such comments to the mods, in order that the tone on ATS is not negatively impacted by such comments.

My apologies if you found no humor in it.

I have never felt the need to curse once on this board and I applaud your efforts to curb the momentum. No disrespect was intended.

The other thing that I think lowers the tone is the use of profanity acronyms including but not limited to:

- STFU

- FU

- LMFAO

etc.....

... but they're more a "part" of the Internet culture or meme, if you will ... excessive use of the same may warrant further attentions, though.

It's, basically, Carlin's Dirty Seven ... and then some ... being the core focus with regards this "cleanup" and/or absolution effort.

Honestly, folks, it seems quite certain that we are All capable of expressing our thoughts, ideals, concerns and replies in a manner Above the use of expletives and other derogatory terminologies, phrases and what have you.

I have witnessed a rise both in profanity and name calling in recent weeks.

I am glad the staff is aware and taking steps to correct at least the profanity.

By the way for those people who feel the urge or need to use deragatory descriptions of other members...

Sticks and Stones can break my bones...
But names can never hurt me!

Its rare, but I have cursed on here before (never failing to use the friendly little *, though), and for that I apologize. It isn't necessary, and there are better words that can be used. Definitely something that I will really work on, when I do feel the urge.

Some of the name calling that has been going on lately (especially in political topics) has been crazy though.
