US vows punishment for North Korea over ship sinking

news.bbc.co.uk

The North is facing international condemnation after investigators blamed it for the sinking of the ship, in which 46 sailors died.

Pyongyang has rejected the claim as a "fabrication" and threatened war if sanctions were imposed.

China urged restraint and did not criticise the North.

First of all shouldn't it be South Korea making these kind of statements ?? Something is amiss with these recent attacks on both the South Korean ship and what I believe was an attack on the Deepwater Horizon oil platform. Whether North Korea was behind these attacks or not , I believe we are headed towards another war that could turn nuclear.

How are they going to "punish" a country they've basically cut all ties with entirely already? Are they going to send them a strong worded letter of disappointment? The north has nothing to lose as it is..

The only country that has any pull with them is China.

How on earth could NK have sailed a 50s-era sub halway around the world to attack the rig, without being detected?

edit: And I agree with ZombieOctopus. South Korea should be the one to deal with this. The US needs to remove all its troops and hand control of the South's military back to the South.

Sadly, those very words, "US vows punishment" are now nothing more than empty threats as long as Obama remains President. I'm sure the N Koreans are shaking in their Kim shee knowing Obama will soon bow yet again.

He is simply following the trail blazed by his predecessor, including the moron just before him. There is no need to start WW3. This is up to South Korea to deal with, every outside nation needs to leave them alone. The US installing and propping up dictators in the South for decades helped lead to where we are today.

I read somewhere that among the responses the US was planning was a "Strongly worded UN resolution denouncing NK".

Oh noes, not that! Anything but that!

Obama's response will be to apologize, then point out all the infractions the US ever committed, and finally, $25 billion in aid to NK.

I don't think it is Obama, I see Obama as war mongering as Bush (hence the intensification of drone attacks). So no, it is not Obama, it is Afghanistan.

America is stuck, in a place where most empires learned their lesson, but America, a relatively young/immature empire made the same old mistake all his elders warned him about.

Did you even listen to a single witness of the deepwater horizon event? Not a single person said they were "attacked". Instead they all mentioned that the blowout preventer failed and caused the engines on the platform to go crazy to the point of overheating and causing an explosion.

Check the 60 minutes news program website where they interview people who were on the platform and some kids who were fishing underneath when it happened.

The North Koreans have mini submarines, such as Sang-O and Yugo class.

One of them must have been hidden inside the hull of a freighter (acting as the mothership) and deployed the minisub in the Gulf of Mexico, in the vicinity of the Deepwater Horizon. That's how, in my theory.

Why would they have done it? It just does not make sense to me. If Kim was gonna do something, he would go all out. He would die either way.

I hope your not suggesting that North Korea could possibly have been responsible for an attack on an Oil Rig in the Gulf? Its one thing to put a torpedo into a South Korean naval vessel within spitting distance of the North, sending a NK Sub half way around the world to torpedo a BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico is even beyond fiction

There are roughly 4,000 oil rigs in thee Gulf of Mexico. So Kim sends a mini-sub to pick out this particular rig...???

He could have just gone off the coast of California....why travel all the way to the Gulf?

Why travel to the Gulf? Because around south Florida and Cuba a large amount of the oil drilling sites are run by, you guessed it, China. They need there oil and Obama's expansion of ocean drilling threatened their very existance.

There's a pretty good chance that Kim Jong Il was impostor-replaced.

Actually, the US has a treaty of mutual defense with the Republic of Korea (1953, Panmunjom). (Just as we had an agreement for the missile defense of Poland and the Czech Republic.)

Does anyone on ATS really believe that Barack Obama would engage in war with another state.

It took him days to decide to attack three teenage pirates, months to add to forces already engaged against a bunch of rag-tag terrorists.

We will let our friends face this on their own.

The Koreans are a proud and self-reliant people, and will respond against the North. China will then take our friends out of the picture as they adhere to there mutual-support agreement with the People's Republic.

I doubt we have the resources to fund or fight a war anymore, anyway, given that our funding comes from China.

We are at the hands of a pathetic excuse for "leadership," much less Hope and Change. Obama would rather attack one of our own states, Arizona, than a weak, despotic, delusional Communist aggressor.

Look what you've done to my Country!

Well here is a report my friend Hx found thought I would post here.

This is how:

US Orders Blackout Over North Korean Torpedoing Of Gulf Of Mexico Oil Rig

A grim report circulating in the Kremlin today written by Russia’s Northern Fleet is reporting that the United States has ordered a complete media blackout over North Korea’s torpedoing of the giant Deep water Horizon oil platform owned by the World’s largest offshore drilling contractor Transocean that was built and financed by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., that has caused great loss of life, untold billions in economic damage to the South Korean economy, and an environmental catastrophe to the United States.

Most important to understand about this latest attack by North Korea against its South Korean enemy is that under the existing “laws of war” it was a permissible action as they remain in a state of war against each other due to South Korea’s refusal to sign the 1953 Armistice ending the Korean War.

To the attack itself, these reports continue, the North Korean “cargo vessel” Dai Hong Dan believed to be staffed by 17th Sniper Corps “suicide” troops left Cuba’s Empresa Terminales Mambisas de La Habana (Port of Havana) on April 18th whereupon it “severely deviated” from its intended course for Venezuela’s Puerto Cabello bringing it to within 209 kilometers (130 miles) of the Deep water Horizon oil platform which was located 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the coast of the US State of Louisiana where it launched an SSC Sang-o Class Mini Submarine (Yugo class) estimated to have an operational range of 321 kilometers (200 miles).

On the night of April 20th the North Korean Mini Submarine manned by these “suicidal” 17th Sniper Corps soldiers attacked the Deep water Horizon with what are believed to be 2 incendiary torpedoes causing a massive explosion and resulting in 11 workers on this giant oil rig being killed outright. Barely 48 hours later, on April 22nd , this North Korean Mini Submarine committed its final atrocity by exploding itself directly beneath the Deep water Horizon causing this $1 Billion oil rig to sink beneath the seas and marking 2010’s celebration of Earth Day with one of the largest environmental catastrophes our World has ever seen.

To the reason for North Korea attacking the Deep water Horizon, these reports say, was to present US President Obama with an “impossible dilemma” prior to the opening of the United Nations Review Conference of the Parties to the Treat on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) set to begin May 3rd in New York.

This “impossible dilemma” facing Obama is indeed real as the decision he is faced with is either to allow the continuation of this massive oil leak catastrophe to continue for months, or immediately stop it by the only known and proven means possible, the detonation of a thermonuclear device.
