THE QUEENSLAND city of Townsville has turned to the US for sperm donations as Australia faces a critical shortage, the Townsville Bulletin reports.

Queensland Fertility Group, the largest fertility clinic in Townsville, 1300 kilometers from Brisbane, pays more than $700 an ampule for sperm imported from the U.S.

Infertility specialist Dr Ron Chang attributed this decline to recent changes to the law that mean sperm donors have to be contactable once the child they helped to conceive turns 18.

I just had to post this. I watched the Colbert Report tonite, and he brought it up, and I just had to spread the word.

$700 is a pretty good money for an ampule I would think. I dont know much about the market, but Im sure a bunch of teenagers in the US would be able to meet the demand.

Seriously? A sperm shortage...? How does that even happen!? 700 US dollars an ampule! Holy budding chrysanthemums!!

That's good money, considering how donating sperm to a country with a legitimate resource shortage would probably get you nothing.

One reason for the shortage is the Australian law which keeps the donors name on file and any child that may result from an impregnation has the legal right to locate the father after "x" years.

Good on you Slayer !!!

In 18 years (and nine months), you will probably have a dozen different women and a dozen very NASTY lawyers demanding eighteen years of back dated child support payments.from you.

The Law here says if you are the proven biological father you pay, regardless of the circumstances. It just ain't worth the risk.

Hell, I could solve this problem single-handedly...
...well, to be fair, I might need to use both hands. It might get too tiring with just one.

What a weird thread....

Seems the decent men are all in Oz...not many of them willing to give up their sperm for quick buck. Either that or they haven't watched enough American Pie movies.

No way Jose, eh ?

Hehehehehe.

Well if making out with a glass test tube in a nasty little cubicle is your idea of a good night out.
Then go for it.

In eighteen years, I bet there will be DNA profiling of just about everyone on the planet. So there is a rapidly diminishing chance of getting away with a paternity suit.

They could always bring in some Mexicans. They will fix that problem pretty quickly. That town will go from a small town to a bustling metropolis in just 20 years, you watch.

You know Mr Shepard me and my friends think your Jose Jimanez impression is A-Okay, but what your doing with it is B-A-D…

There is another scene in that movie that is very applicable to this thread, but probably inappropriate on ATS.

I dont know if it means anything but Townsville has a large army base and airforce base. Wouldnt have thought that sperm would be a problem.

I've often wondered why, like women who give their eggs or be surrogates for their infertile sisters, that brothers or male relatives can't donate sperm for an infertile male member of a family?
Surely that's better than a complete stranger where you have absolutely no idea what you're getting.

As for this story, it's quite obvious that they are trying to circumvent the laws and regulations that local donors have to abide by that created the shortage to begin with.

Donors from America are anonymous and as such the recipients in Australia have no idea who they are. Pretty much like it used to be here before the laws were passed that made the local sperm donor supply dry up.

It kind of makes our laws appear stupid as it means that children of Australian born donors have a right to know their parentage but the children of American donors apparently don't have that right?
Either they do, or they don't.

I can't see this loophole lasting much longer. It's discriminatory for both the australian sperm donors and also for the children of American donors as the law stands at the moment.

Of course, it could well be a conspiracy. Yet another spanner in the works to stop Australians breeding!!!! lol
