I grew up in a city that is a major steel manufacture and mining hub. That is much worse in my mind than second hand smoking easily. We lived just four kilometres from mountains that could not always be seen for the pollution. The government and citizens of this country seem to want to stop smoking a lot more than these problems even though you would definitely see a decrease in cancer rates in my opinion if they were closed and we were able to see and breathe the sea air. I have since moved to a city seven times the size that is about one fifth as polluted.

It's easier to go after an already marginalised minority, in this case smokers.
With all the emissions spewing into the environment from industry and transport it seems petty to even mention smokers and the air quality in the same sentence.

Soon as you mention the air quality in relation to big business you are attacked as anti - progress, anti jobs.
Mention air quality in relation to smoking and you can be a hero.

Though reading the report I posted it seems we smokers make quite the contribution to the coffers.
