To be blunt, military spending is an economic stimulus. Eisenhower warned about this half a century ago. The United States doesn't actually need any new weapons, but the economy needs employment for aerospace engineers. The people who scream about their taxes being used to save other people's lives don't seem to mind that money being used to potentially destroy other people's lives. This makes it politically acceptable. It's a vicious circle.
