So, just as I thought at the time (2010), it has NOT been solved. It is just a theory, like so many others.
I am no conspiracy theorist, but just because someone spouts a theory and signs it "Oxford University", or "NASA", for that matter, I am not going to nod and forget about it. Even the notoriously positivist Wikipedia doesn't deem it "solved".

Any new ideas about it?

BTW, this thing - supposedly a "weather pattern" - has been there, fixed, for at least 30 years, when it was first spotted.
For those who aren't even familiar with this phenomenon, here is the first (as far as I know) thread about it on this website:

Thanks for the info, I've always wondered what caused that. Pretty cool. Maybe this will encourage the scientists to broaden their horizon a bit and not concentrate solely on their own fields.

Yes, it is interesting, and thank you for your interest. Isn't it strange how sometimes the most truly significant or at least genuinely interesting PROVED phenomena seem to just disappear from the radar?

I hope more discussion ensues here.
I have nothing to contribute to it, but I would like to read it.
