Beyond Foreclosure – Life in a Tent City

Photos of foreclosure signs give a better indication, but lately even they have been trumped by more dire images that portray the bleakness of the current economic condition: that of emerging so-called “tent cities.”

SOURCE

Some of the largest tent cities in America include those in Reno, Nevada, Seattle, Washington, and Nashville, Tennessee. Several of these tent cities have hundreds of inhabitants—and almost all of them have seen an increase this year.

Tent city highlights US homes crisis

Most residents live in tents, some in mobile homes in various states of disrepair, their possessions crammed in with them or spread out on the ground.

Amenities are basic - no mains electricity, no plumbing, no drainage. Portable showers offer a chance to wash, but there is nowhere to prepare food, apart from makeshift tables in the open air.

If they would have worked harder and not bought a house they would not be trespassing.

I hope someone gets in there with some fire and dogs to disperse the vermin immediately.

Some of these people worked harder and longer than you, my friend.

Have you ever walked in anyone of these people's shoes? I hope not and I hope you never have to. Consider yourself lucky, if you're not in their situation.

A lot of these people may have been ripped off by the Bernie Madoffs off this world and may have lost everything including, in some cases, their life.

If this is the only way they can exist for now, in America, so be it.

Shame on the American Government and State Authorities for letting this happen while the Bankers and Wall Street get Bailed out.

So, Don't judge them, Mate. Unless you're one of 'em..

Anyhow, how old are you? 11? You're comments are disturbing to say the least. You don't belong here..

Very surreal to actually see this. See, I'm in a bracket that hasn't been hit at all by this so I don't 'feel' the scope of the turmoil that these people are feeling. I'm 24, work a crappy minimum wage job with no savings just to put myself through school and live in an apartment.

I can't imagine not being able to make my rent and having to sleep in a tent with other people who are basically my 'competition' in possibly finding work. One thing is for sure, the kids of those families will not grow up taking things for granted. I hope they all at least have hope and I hope they can pull through. Very sad and scary.

I might do the same later this month, just to get out to the woods again before it all goes down. To see nature and live under the canopy is a little slice of the Divine
I camped from May until December last year, and enjoyed the experience quite a lot. Friends visited, town wasn't far, and I worked the whole time - saved quite a bit of rent in the process too. Unfortunately, winter requires a much more solid plan, especially at our latitude.

Another thing, it stated that they had nowhere to cook their food and things like that. The fire risk is probably insane and with everyone so cramped together, it could be a very dangerous situation. If one of these places was burned down and someone died I have no doubt they would be made to disperse which would probably cause even more problems. Bad situation all around.

WOW! I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on this one and assume you are being sarcastic. Otherwise your post appears to be a large steaming pile of ignorant troll excrement.

In seattle we are having a real problem with the sudden boom in the homeless population. Many people came here in hope of finding work, only to discover that jobs here are few and far between and affordable housing is more scarce than a $100k a year job. A minimum wage or part time job will not pay enough to rent you a good cardboard box with enough left to feed yourself.

And with the employers in the drivers seat due to the ever growing number of job seekers to chose from I ask, who would hire someone that is homeless without a telephone or email without transportation without access to a shower and that can not provide a permanent address?

It seems that as Americans we are reluctant at times to help our own and quick to judge and label the less fortunate. Remember that no one is immune to hardship and miss fortune, any one of us could find ourselves waking up in a tent due simply to circumstances outside of our control.

Just a dumb thing to say honestly. It's obvious you have a hate against Americans and it's blatantly obvious that you're not American.

Ive watched all of these videos before, and watched Lisa Lings interview on 20/20 a while back.

My ISSUE with the people living in Tent cities is that the MAJORITY of them ARE TOO PROUD to ask for help from their children or family, infact the majority of people she interviews says that their friends and family dont know their living in a tent city.

Im sorry I dont feel sorry for the people who are too proud to be helped, infact it pisses me off.

No! It not what you say, it's how you say it.

Its humiliating for them and sometimes pride is all that keeps you going in a situation where you are already depressed. also, if they have a family like mine, the pain of going to them would just not be worth it. They would make you feel like crap, and not do anything to help. OS i can see why some people wouldn't want to tell their families. Or maybe their families are struggling as well and they don't want to place that extra burden and stress on family members who are close to being homeless themselves.

I actually thought this is how many Americans think, it fits in with the social darwinism your society operates on. It's this type of view that made it so hard to pass a succesfull HC reform and why everything that helps the less fortunate in your society is seen as "socialism".

S & F, OP

Please people don't feed the trolls on ATS and they'll go somewhere else. I know how hard it can be, but just like a stray animal (only less worthy of compassion) if they are not fed they move along.

Thanks again OP.

Oh, are you trying to get me to talk to you and all that good stuff. As if I couldn't get the hint with all your 'notice me! notice me!' posts. I'm going to block you after I post this and I hope everyone else does as well cause all your doing is trying to get a rise out of people. Please stop replying to this person. The smell of loser that rolls off you is suffocating.
