I have to agree that any more advance civilization with some conscious that would get in touch with the humans of that time (or even with todays for what matters) would do their best to not intervene in human affairs. And certainly wouldn't provide their tech or high-end knowledge for people that would probably end up using it to cause havoc in the universe or simply destroy each other.

At best they would teach the foundations to establish a culture that one day could reach their own stage.

I don't know what to take from those lines. They could mean a whole bunch of stuff or simply nothing, but for me they do speak about a "spacecraft" which apparently has a on-board computer with some sort of AI.

It's a shame that the region in question became a war zone and that many records are being destroyed as we speak.

Not to nitpick, but I seem to remember the description of the ziggurat as "silver and orichalc". At what point if ever did that translation / description change.

Did you ever think that might be in direct relation to the history of the area. The texts and such we have recovered draw out a very interesting, almost extra terrestrial story. this story about Enki is a perfect example. This is definately a place where if we're going to find written or physical evidence of advanced civilizations visiting us in the distant past, then we just might find it here. Thats definately something our government wouldn't want us to know about, or want scientist digging around, about ready to un earth the truth...they wouldnt want that non sense goin down.. assuming they already know about other lifeforms in the universe.What a perfect way to burn the evidence without anyone questioning or even knowing for that matter..start a WAR. Thatll keep people from snoopin around the source... i mean c'mon So many ancient texts probably confirmed just that, with great, detailed descriptions of spacecraft, and physical beings or "gods", but all of the articles are swept up and kept locked up in secret libraries by big brother, the man, illuminati, the gov....ect..

That sounds a lot like the effects of the radiation we see in japan. AFTER THE USA DROPPED A NUKE ON THEM. Maybe there were nukes detonated in the distant past. Well that's kind of the image I got aswell, especially in regards to the eaves giving commands and making sounds, that pretty much cemented the vision.

Hmm. Interesting views on this. However, I just do not see a spaceman here. I see a story about Enki building a city called Eridu(Eridug) with a focus on the details of a temple. Then as the narrative continues, he gets in his boat and paddles to the city of Nippur(Nibru). Once there he has a feast and recieves a blessing from his father Enlil.

To me it looks like the temple was built on a ziggurat surrounded by a large moat or a canal. Which fits well with the description "it is an artfully built mountain which floats on the water". It even says that "Enki has surrounded with a holy reed fence!" That sounds like a moat with reeds growing in it, as well as it also mentions 2 different kinds of fish living there. Both fish and reeds would be important. Fish are food, and the reeds can be used to make baskets and boats and such. As it says "Your reed-mats are like lapis lazuli, decorating the roof-beams." The temple must have had some sort of thatch roof that was painted blue.

"Its brickwork makes utterances and gives advice." The "utterances" could be a reference to the acoustic effect to make the chanting, prayers, and singing sound larger than life. Just like it says the musical instruments "resounded by themselves with a sweet sound" while the priests sang. As well as the "advice" that the walls gave could simply be proverbs inscribed or painted on the walls.

The shrine with the "tangled thread, is beyond understanding. The shrine's emplacement is situated by the constellation the Field" was most likley some sort of box with an idol in it located at a place in the temple that had a particular paint design or a curtain that was called the "field constellation" The idol inside the box was probably situated so that it faced a hole in the roof to look at the "chariot constellation" otherwise known as the sun.

I see this as simply a story to be told to make the temple sound more impressive. Temple worship was and still is big business. Anything to get more people to come to the temple means more revenue.

I think the real important part is that this story connects the city of Eridu(Eridug) with the city of Nippur(Nibru). That gives the two cities a sense of unifacation. This was most likely written by request of a king for political reasons as opposed to religious reasons.

I believe that is due to the depleted uranium used in some of the shell cases...google it and you'll find more info, it's been a while since i look at that stuff.

The gives advice part could be just like travel today. Please put your seat in the upright position. Make sure your seat belt is buckled. Stand clear during takeoff. In case of an emergency... you get the idea. These type of phrases could easily be though of as advise.

I'm not sure if i am getting the jist of your post properly, but I think you are correct and, this is simply an ancient travel brochure to promote pilgrimages to the temples of each city.

It's pretty clear that both Eridu/Eridug and Nippur/Nibru were well established cities at the time this was written. (Note I'm not sure why the spelling of these city names are changed in the Oxford translation, but practically all published material uses the Eridu and Nippur spelling.) As these locations were both bustling urban areas, it only makes sense for a king to commission an advertisement like this to be written. As temple worship was big business for both the priestly and ruling classes.

It really does not have much to do with the rituals of temple worship. Which leads me to believe that it was written for a more sociopolitical reason.

I also see the most important part of this is Enki traveling from Eridu to Nippur. That gives the the people of both cities some kind of common ground socially. It would entice the people from Nippur to want to visit the temple at Eridu. And it would also make the people from Eridu want to copy and reenact Enki's journey to Nippur. Possibly as a annual pilgrimage.

I do not see a spaceman here. All I see is propaganda to encourage trade between the two cities.

I don't think it was propaganda at all. Have you even seen some of the artifacts from Sumeria?

We have rockets that are shaped aerodynamically, flying in the sky.

We have aero fins on the rockets and boosters, with flames coming out of them, clearly showing the boosters propelling the rockets.

We have glass windows in the rockets with people or beings in them.

We have large-eyed beings in space-suits, with glass fronts in their accompanying helmets, with tubes going to backpacks that they are wearing.

In Palenque (probably one of the most important ancient Mayan cities), we have a carving of K'inich Janaab' Pakal, inside a space ship showcasing astonishing detail, as shown here:



Make no mistake about it, ancient people knew what they saw, even if they could not describe it with understanding.

You aren't a believer in the UFO phenomenon yet you provide a post which accurately describes something waaaay beyond the norm and reaching into a scifi book?

That really is perplexing to me.

Granted interpretation is the key to a viewpoint but even without a photograph from the times, the vehicle and mechanisms described are very modern sounding. There's no way to say for sure it was a flying UFO, but unless you can provide another answer, that's the most reasonable to me.

Let's not derail the thread here. This is about the temple of Enki in Eridu.

I have not said that there was not anything in ancient texts that could not be considered as spaceman encounter. I have simply said that I do not think that this is one of them.

I know about Pakal's coffin lid and Von Daniken's explanation of it. I have even seen the full scale replica of it at the spaceman museum in Roswell, NM. I am just not sure what to make of it. It is one of those that has me still wondering.

There certainly are strange texts that describe things that could only be described as "not of this world". The most famous being the Hebrew account of Elijah being taken away in a whirlwind that was escorted by chariots. 2Kings Ch 2. The book of Malachi (Ch 3) also says that Elijah will return. This one I still do not have an answer for. The best explanation for this seems to be something "not of this world" (spaceman maybe?) has taken him away and will eventually bring him back. It reminds me of Spielberg's Close Encounters.

However, I just do not think that this (from OP) describes a spaceman. It describes a temple and then a trip by Enki to get the blessing from his father Enlil. Read the text for yourself. Enki is the main deity of the city of Eridu (Eridug) Just remember that Enki is paddling a boat to the city of Nippur (which is called in this translation Nibru) It is not the magical planet called by Sitchen "Nibiru" It is a city. And the main spiritual center of of their culture.

This seems to be a comon thread in their religious culture. As there is also a similar text about the deity Nanna (also called Sin/Suen and Ashgirbabbar/Asimbabbar) He is the moon god and the main deity of the city of Ur (or as in this translation Urim) He also traveles to Nippur to get the blessing from his father Enlil to build the city of Ur/Urim. For the bible people, Ur is the city that Abram/Abraham hailed from.

Just a thought about the interpretation.

If it were a spacecraft or air craft and it spoke utterances and gave advice could it mean that?: The utterances were of a computer, like a previous poster said 'buckle your seatbelt, fuel level low, etc' and the advice given could have been from a command center, like that of air craft controller or anyone on the other end of a radio signal giving take-off and flight advice

just an idea and I do love reading things like this. If you or anyone has anything else like this I would love to read about it.

a model of Enki's E.ABZU was rebuilt by the akkadian ENMERKAR (Nimrod/Narmer/Osiris) following the black sea flood, as outlined in the akkadian text, ENMERKAR AND THE LORD OF ARRATA.

the name of the rebuilt structure was KA.DINGIR.RA, which in late akkadian was BAB.ILU. in hebrew pseudopigrahical BOOK OF ENOCH, it was the temple of DUDAEL (the pile of stones placed on top of the hole in the desert called dudael). in the old testament biblical texts it was BABEL. and in the new testament it was associated with the abyss/bottomless pit (abzu = abyss, see revelation 9)

this is translated to GATE OF GOD (in some references it's GATE OF THE GODS)

the abyss connection is a reference, obviously, to the ABZU. interestingly enough, ABYDOS (in egypt) is pronounced ABZU. (abydos is the greek spelling. the egyptian spelling is abdju. the dj is pronounced z, just as djoser is pronounced zoser, so abdju is pronounced abzu. (see the research of egyptologist, david rohl for information on the connection between abydos and mesopotamia).

later data on the connection between the abyss, the abzu, and the tower of babel, are found in references to TIAMAT, the chaotic water. so to be really precise ABZU is the egyptian NUN (the primordial and chaotic waters of creation), which is, surprisingly, associated with the E.ABZU (E.NUN), Enki's spaceship, floating out of and over the Abzu, and is characterized here as the primoridal (holy) mountain rising from the primordial waters of creation (the abzu, the abyss, the god gate from which the gods are born in the enuma elish).

I'm particularly interested in why abyss has come to mean 'bottomless pit', because when I think of that I picture darkness. Did it actually come from the word 'abzu' or was it just a progression of defining a stargate, as you call it.

some of these words appear to hop in the text from nowhere. i've found words that were in the bible only once or twice, and the only other place they were found was in some hebrew pseudopigraphical work, like the book of enoch or some ancient egyptian reference. since the roman and english translators employed jewish translators, they likely were giving them the translation of difficult or rare words, in particular, based on their own knowledge of all relevant hebrew texts, including torah, talmud, and the pseudopigraphia, especially for words with great antiquity.

there are references to the pit and the abyss, separately in the text, but in those cases, they are characterized as a hole in ground and the ocean or sea, when written in english. that is, until you get to revelation 9, where it suddenly shows up as buried abzu/abyss, being unlocked by something that comes down from the sky (referred to as a falling star (a biblical idiom for a fallen angel)..

the bottomless reference, no doubt, harkens back to an older hebrew or jewish word, which is why i started looking for older words that might have bridged the gap. the hole in the desert, known as dudael, is an example, at least for bridging the gap between late akkad and the time of the writing of enoch. but oddly enough it was the abzu itself that linked directly to the abyss/bottomless pit of revelation 9. the original greek was abyssos. why the translators chose bottomless pit, must be related to the jewish translators understanding of the abyss.

i also have an interview with a former member of OTO (Ordo Templi Orientis), where we discuss alistar crowley's alamantrah working and the babalon working of l.ron hubbard and jack parsons (the guy who created solid rocket fuel and jet propulsions labs big wig). it's the babalon working, in particular, that i would like to draw your attention to, as my studies have lead me to believe that it was an elaborate cover story, most specifically designed to confuse the issues arising, historically and currently, between magic, religion and technology.

i could be wrong, however, as i also believe in the power of our spiritual sides, it's just very ....shall we say, conveniently timed and from a group who have historically made light of things like "spiritual powers" on a pretext (i mean, what's the diff between a spiritual power and a magic power, i ask you?).

here's one of the problems i had with it. when i studied crowley's drawing of the being called LAM, who supposedly came threw the portal he opened in the alamantrah working, i noticed it just looked like the head of a penis in the process of coitus with a female sexual organ. and since he supposedly did the working as a sex magick ritual, well, ya know. i think he was providing a cover story of his own. maybe you can figure out what that is by looking at the drawing here:
