Interesting...I have no doubt that animals can sense anything going on whithin the earth. Did my dog sense what is now happening south of us? I have no idea, but it's certainly possible.

He is resting quietly right now...last night it was about 2 to 2.5 hours prior to the first quake....so we'll see how it goes. I hope it was just something totally unrelated so he won't keep it up!

So far today I haven't seen any quakes up in my region, which is a relief!

Wow Westcoast, I'm really happy to see your posts today!! I was trying to remind myself last night that I would have to look into if anything had happened overnight, because my cat was going NUTS!! from about 9 pm on.

Now, he is only 7 months old so pretty hyper anyway, but his behavior last night was really off the charts. He was super mischevious, stealing things and getting on the counters which he seriously knows better, he was just running back and forth through the house like a horse galloping, body slamming doors that weren't open for him, stealing, peeling, and eating BANANAS!! (TWO!) continuously attacking our Chihuahua (they are good buds) and just generally crazy behavior. The dogs were a little unsettled but no where near the same as the cat. I went to bed at 9:45 to the continual sound of Mufasa the cat galloping through the house.

So that pretty much confirms the connection. You and I do not live that far apart, and our animals were obviously sensing something similar. Mine were pretty calm this morning but they weren't going through their usual routines as I get ready for work. Usually they are completely predictable, this morning, they were each off doing something different. And they DIDN'T want to stay outside. Which is odd too.

On a totally different tangent, I had a very wierd dream last night. Me and my family were in a major quake, with the ground cracking open and buildings collapsing. I've never had a dream like that, and I haven't even been checking my normal lists and websites for the past week so there was no external influence....hopefully this is one that will NEVER come true!!

That's just for the past few days.

California has really picked up today and Alaska is quite nosy.....so maybe that is why. Lots of energy flowing up and down the faults? My dogs have been okay today so far.....but I don't know. I'll be relieved if there isn't anything significant along the coast in the next few days!!!

Okay, so now my dog started his wierd barking thing again. Last time it happened was before the last bigger one in cali.

kinda dumb question but whats the threat to western montana if that fault u were talking about goes(not the yellowstone one i know if that goes we will all die so its irrelevent) but the one off the coast of california has me worried as ill be there in agust for a few days i dont wanan get caught in that one any new info sorry to seem self centered but i just wanna know what my odds are of dieing in a cataclyism of epic proportions

My motto is that there is NO dumb question!

First of all, There are a few faults that intersect here in Washington, but none of them need to have ya worried there in Montana, unless they had an impact on Yellowstone. You will have the experts say that they are seperate systems and therefore do not affect each other, but we have the potential of 10+ quake here, so I would think the possibility would be there to impact just about any other nearby system.

If you are visiting California, you just need to be aware of the risks, but certainly don't let that affect your travel plans. You could get hit by a truck tomorrow crossing the road, but that doesn't mean you should never leave your house!! Anyways, you have better odds of getting hit by that truck than being in what is considered 'cataclysmic' quake.

We are over-due here for a 'big' one, but geological time is on the scale of hundreds/thousands/millions of years. Our brief time here is pretty irrelevant.

In reference to my feelings and my dogs behavior, the last time it happened there was a 'moderate' quake in California. I would have to go back and check, but I think it was 6.7. Certainly will get your attention, but not anywhere near cataclysmic. My theory is that my dog could hear/smell/sense something in the ground, reverberating or humming...whatever you want to call it.

So enjoy your trip, and maybe you'll get to experience a smaller quake...it's actually fun, so long as no one is hurt!!!

well i lived through the 89 earthquake even though my fridge tryed to kill me(i was 5 and getting food out of the fridge then it hit and it started to fall twords me kitchen counter saved me but scared the bejebus outa me and i lived near the epicenter(santa cruz mountians on the los gatos side) made it through one moved out of cali hehe hate to come back for 4 days and get another one but i liked the truck comment its entirely too true thanks for the advice!!

I'm keeping a close eye on Mt. Saint Helens tonight. There is a lot going on up there....some very long signatures!!!

Take special note of the 'ring of fire'. Notice the lack of current, larger activity along the west coast (under the most recent 5.0 and above Chile)

My fear is that this is the next area due for a 'release'. I think the swarm in california for the past several months has been building up to something. Could the Alaska swarm, new Guinea and now the vancouver quake all be precursers? I hope not!!

Did you see that 5.1 off the coast of BC? As long as that side of the Juan de Fuca is the one releasing all the tension, I'm feeling good. It's pretty far off the coast.

I'm not feeling good about it at all - The Juan de Fuca Plate is locked and loaded!! The area of this quake has a history a very dark history of very large quakes.
