Scientists have discovered the primary mechanism by which thalidomide causes malformed limbs in developing embryos. This side-effect was recognised after thousands of affected children were born to mothers who had been prescribed the drug for morning sickness.

Research in the journal Science reveals that thalidomide binds to and renders inactive the protein cereblon, which is very important in limb formation. This finding could help the development of safer thalidomide-like drugs.

Thalidomide can be effective in the treatment of certain cancers and leprosy, but its infamous side-effect, which is known as teratogenicity, mean that for women its use remains risky and controversial.

Medical researchers would therefore like to develop drugs that mimic the action of thalidomide, but do not affect limb development...

Arguably a mixed blessing. This may well open promising new avenues for research; but doubtless many will say this particular type of drug has caused so much harm that any future human trials would be at best highly controversial.

Yes it is a mixed blessing but a mystery that needed to be solved.

Thanks for posting the information.

you mean like....*gasp* THC? hmm...seems that doesn't cause malformations in embryos...yes, open the doors for research of that. its worked for how many thousands of years already, after all.

/tangent.

sorry.

Fair point. However the suggestion of future research refers specifically to the following:

Thalidomide can be effective in the treatment of certain cancers and leprosy, but its infamous side-effect, which is known as teratogenicity, mean that for women its use remains risky and controversial.

Morning sickness exists for a reason. I dont know that trying to "cure" it is all that wise.

Morning sickness prevents the expectant mother from ingesting substances that may impact the developing fetus. Especially in the first trimester when the all important nervous system is in critical formative stages.

So, while curing morning sickness might well make the mother more comfortable, it could also cause problems for the developing fetus.

Why don't more people have a basic knowledge of human life and understand that WE DON'T NEED PHARMACUTICAL drugs period. There are many posts in the Atral Projection threads that talk about man living for hundreds and maybe thousands of years? Our DNA has been so destroyed by these Elite idiots!!! Pisses me off to no end.

Good post.

This is very exciting news! Despite what many people think, Thalidomide is still used today as a treatment of some diseases and has legitimate medicinal value when used responsibly.
