Malaysians' voracious appetite for turtle eggs could drive the marine creatures to extinction on its shores, conservationists warned on Wednesday.

Apparently the Malaysians view turtle eggs as a delicacy. The demand for the eggs exceeds supply, hence the problem.

Sharma said that some 10,000 leatherback turtles nested in Terengganu every year in the 1950s but that this had been reduced to just 10 a year at present.

that's a huge decline in numbers.

Our appetite for certain habitual tastes is bigger than our resources apparently. like an engine that can't be turned off until it's too late and substitutes must be provided or else there will be blood!

yet we still feel the need to kill and eat creatures with faces and souls.

fn disgusting.

That's bizarre that anybody would have a "voracious appetite" for ANY kind of eggs.

Seems to me that "delicacy" usually refers to any disgusting food that people wouldn't normally eat.

Damn! This reminds me of my pet turtles that I keep back home. I hope something is done to prevent the extinction of these friendly critters before they end up on the hit list.

Sounds gross to me...

unfortunate that there is no global check for this kind of crap. This, along with whale and dolphin slaughter are so beyond my mind that I want to get violent..

People eat endangered species all the time. Tigers, lemurs, whales, sea turtles, the list goes on.

Not that I think it is okay, but cultural traditions are just that- traditions.
