Lets say he was a independent, or even your party...he seemed to have the right answers that coincided with your general political viewpoints.

Then one day, someone asked him what religion he was...he flatly stated:

"I am an athiest, I will not discuss policy or matters of national security with ghosts, invisible dietys, Santa, or the tooth fairy. I will remain focused on what is on earth verses what is in books of myths and legends"

Would you vote for such a person? Give reasons why or more importantly, why not if you care to...

personally, I long for such a day of honesty in a politician..

I would never know, as I could care less what the POTUS religious preference is. I do not believe that a candidate of religion "A" can be any better than candidate of religion "B".

BUT, that would definitely be some brutal honesty IF a candidate (one that had a legitimate shot at winning) was forthcoming about such a thing.

Assuming I agreed with his policies, I would vote for him. Religion matters not to me.

Saying something like that would kill any chance the candidate had, though. You can bank on that.

Sure. Conversely I would vote for a religious candidate as well. It comes down to ability. Anything else is personal bias. For some people faith is important. For others it's not.

I supported Mike Gravel in the Libertarian Party running for president and he was a Unitarian Universalist. I don't know if he was an Atheist but he was not religious like Christian or anything. So my answer is yes I would vote for an Atheist, Agnostic, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Jew, Baha'i, Taoist, Animist, Pagan, Neo-Pagan, Wicca(Neo-Pagan). But I do have to admit I would not vote for a Luciferianist or a Satanist, sorry but I do have to draw a line there.

Nope.

You cannot place a man, or woman, into power who believes they are at the "top of the hierarchy". Even the POTUS must answer to someone....

Hope that makes sense. =)

I would vote for somebody over their policies, not religion. I believe in God and I do have faith but at the same time I dont let that get in the way of voting in a representitive.

Unfortunately, a third of the country votes on behalf of their church.

Absolutely.

Religion has no place in politics or public policy.

Absolutely. Even if politicians don't declare their religious affiliation it still guides all their decisions. Religion is the whole basis of 90% of America's problems.

Sure, but I always seen the POTUS as the bottom of the heirachy considering he answers to everyone...he is simply the person we put in front to beat on or pat on the back when the people take action.

Yeah, I think I would vote for an athiest. The Christians aren't doing a very good job, far as I can tell.

I don't vote for parties or platforms. I vote for a person and issues. I don't care about gender, race or faith. He/She could be a follower of the Great Flying Spaghetti Monster or nothing at all, it matters not.

Unfortunately, there has not been a single candidate for president for almost the last half century that has been worthy of the office. What's more, the whole current class of representation in Washington, reflects true to this problem as well.

Vote for an atheist? No... I'd vote for a decent candidate who happened to be an Atheist, though.

Apparently God told Shrub to go in on Afghanistan, and Iraq.

There's where religious conviction is crossing the line for the POTUS. Personally, I don't give a tinker's cuss about what people believe, so long as it doesn't affect me or the rest of the planet.

Short answer is no.

Longer answer would be that I find that I can not put my faith and trust in someone that can not see something higher than themselves. While it is great that this hypothetical candidate and I see eye to eye on many issues, some standards should not be compromised.

The inability to accept something to be true by nothing more than faith tells me that ultimately this person would be unable to take a timely and decisive action without having all the facts in detail. It is the ability to follow "gut feelings" that makes a leader both strong and experienced when facing unknown situations.

In other words, waiting to find out exactly why a bully attacks will not prevent his next attack. Sucker punching him in gut may not prevent his attack, but will make him consider his options a little more beforehand.

Since I trust God to help me each and every single day of my life I would have more confidence in a candidate who trusted God as well. I would think it was foolish to trust my country to the care of someone foolish enough to not want a relationship with God or especially to a President who's criteria for Supreme Court Judge is satanic worship. I don't think satanic worship is just another religion, although I do want my freedom of religion protected. But I think the devil is real and for some reason means harm to mankind, maybe he is a space alien. Maybe he has enlisted the help of or tricked the elites to depopulate the planet so he can repopulate it with reptilian space aliens. Why is the devil a repitle? Anything is possible. God says in the Bible that He has the situation well in hand, but He doesn't tell us to sit on our hands either. We should be praying that God would get us through this problem we are having with the elites who want to depopulate us and a President bent on destroying the economy.

I wouldn't vote for a POTUS, (if I was American) that WAS religious. Atheists need to take action and bring the religious fools to heel. It's our time now, religion will no longer suppress mankind.

Religion (OF ANY KIND) = FAIL.

You wouldn't even have the opportunity to vote for an Atheist for POTUS. I do not recall 1 atheist or even Agnostic running for POTUS. There hasn't even been one in the primaries. So you don't have that option, even if you did only about 10,000 people would vote for that candidate AT BEST! Mike Gravel was the closest and he was a Unitarian Universalist.

Sidenote: There is only one Atheist in Congress and he is a Unitarian Universalist. No one is very vocalist or even openly expressive of their 'unreligious' views.

I think I may already have. I voted for the socialist workers party candidate in 2000. I had to write his name in and I cant remember it now. Of course he had no chance in hell of winning but I was young and angry
