Another big one, just a week a way from the California quake. Are they connected?

Yeah I have that Firefox Earthquake add on as well and I got 2 quakes in Haiti...

One was 7.0 and the 2nd was 7.3. It's odd that only the 7.0 is showing up now, but I know I had 2 separate quakes here in Firefox.

Just wondering, that quake in Northern California was, what, a 4-point something, which is normal. But, were ALL of those aftershocks normal? I mean, there was over a dozen I believe that were all at least 2.0+. Seems like alot of afters.

Wow ! 7 points ouch!

Any word on Tsunamis in the area? A lot of people can be at risk.

This was a big quake.

Any information coming from Port Au Prince yet?

They must be reeling from this right now...I hope things are moderate and turn out to be somewhat ok.

Equake shakes for an update. The 7.3 was updated to a 7.0, that's why it shook. The California quake was 6.5. From what was sad, the aftershocks are normal, and are suppose to last for a week. Doesn't seem normal to be, but I'm not a geologist.

OK CNN has the story up now.

They said a Tsunami watch is in effect for the whole region.

Let's hope there is NONE!

Second aftershock, still pretty big.

Sadly, these kinds of aftershocks are normal and there will be more.

A 7.0 is a very serious quake for any area, but to be just a few miles from a huge population center with very poor construction is terrible.

Aftershocks of any magnitude below the original quake are to be expected and will occur over the course of the week following the quake. This will further damage buildings in the area.

Report from the ground says "the sky is just thick with dust"

I'd think the chances of them being related are zero. Different Plates. They are connected in that they occured on the same planet.

If you have a genuine interest, there are many resources to learn from available on the Internet.

USGS Facts and Stats

If memory serves, earthquakes occur at a rate of one every 6 seconds, however most are too small to feel.

Here is a good resource on Plate Tectonics.

There are about 150 earthquakes on average per year in the 6 to 7 range.

Thanks for posting up info on the earthquakes threads I have. I don't know how you get the information so fast.

I know there are going to be dead.

The question is how many. And what extent is the destruction in Port Au Prince and surrounding areas??

Hopefully the death tolls will be minimal and limited. In an area that poor though, the building standards have to be substandard at best.

This does not bode well for the people living there, and makes for a highly dangerous urban environment to be trapped in.

It's always a bad sign when you look at the USGS "Did You Feel It?" map and the reports don't start for 100 or so kilometers away.

This is going to be ugly, and that's the last thing that a country like Haiti needs.

I hope my nation the USA sends in supplies and aid NOW.

Our neighbors need us right now!

We could be a really awesome friend right now you know?

I say give them all the help they need. We just print our money anyways. It's not real or anything.

The only cost will be the manpower and risk that the men take to render aid.

But I hope our guys are already gearing up and heading to the location. **I AM HOPING!**

Yeah my laptop shook because of the firefox add on. It actually makes me jump! I heard they have tsunami warnings out already. It would not be good if one hit anywhere down there.

Haiti EQ

We always have, no matter where. If we don't it will make the Obama Administration unique in not helping and I doubt that.

Even more important is that people help as individuals by putting their money where their mouth is, instead of expecting the governments to be all things to all people.
