ppssst, your linky says 7.4.

Not that it matters much, that's still big quake. Hope it was deep enough to stop mass destruction on the surface!

Im sure the mag will change as they get the full results in of the shake,

Yep and there pretty used to ones of this size, Just concerns me a little on the location in the ocean, Deep quakes in the ocean cause the tsunamis, which can end up causeing more damage than the quake itself,

But im sure this will pass without to much drama.

hmm Well im not sure that this is that unusual, Java is in the ring of fire which is a big quake zone,
This time of year tends to be the time for some of the biggish ones,

But interesting none the less

I just e-mailed my brother in Jakarta while browsing ATS. He was on the 25th floor and felt the shaking and they run down. He said the shaking lasts quite a while. ATS is great, you guys are fast on the news!

Im glad your brother is ok
News officials in the area are reporting many buildings are damaged

: Dozens of buildings collapsed after the quake hit the island of Java, but there were no confirmed reports of deaths: emergency official

ow.ly...

Seems that it may just be older buildings,

Also seems so far that the tsunami alert has been canceled
www.prh.noaa.gov...

The quake center is reporting the quake at a mag of 7 now, so looks like it has gone down a little,

Thanks asala! It's very scary and my bro said people swarmed the stairs and he was so high up, he said he saw his life flashes before him so I figure it must be pretty serious.

At least there are no tsunamis which if happens will hit hard because many coastal areas are heavily populated in Java.

Here's an Indonesian website that has some pictures. 11 deaths now. Many offices are letting people go home.

I cant imagine what fear must go through you at that point, Thanks for the info and your brothers personal account of that,
The death toll has risen to 15 now, My thoughts are with the families of them all,

They also said many people in the shopping areas just passed out with shock

The feeling from the last Tsunami there has deep scars,

JEEZ !!

Aint this the second one in the last fortnight ?!

They seem to be occuring with unusual frequency
lately.

Could it be possible these are indicators of a tipping point ?

Y'know like the 'critical mass' milestone that once crossed can't be reversed ?

Yikes !

I get a feeling (Though, That's Just IMHO i.e) our planet is gearing up for some kind of a major shift..

Maybe conciousness, maybe climate change, Hell, maybe even extraterrestrial !

..
then again -

maybe - It's just Me !

Just to update now things have settled a little,

The death toll has risen to 46 people and many people injured, Hospitals in the areas are finding it hard to cope in the mist of the mag 7 quake,

The quake, which struck just before 3pm local time, was felt as far away as Surabaya, Indonesia's second biggest city, about 300 miles away.

At least 27 people were injured in Jakarta, where buildings shook and swayed, causing panic among office workers and residents of blocks of flats.

"Everything was shaking and my neighbour shouted 'Quake, quake!'," said Nur Syara, who lives on the 31st floor of a block of flats. "You could hear the walls creaking. I lay down on the floor. I was scared things would collapse."

I am hoping that this is the only one in that time frame.

When I read the thread topic, I almost crapped myself. It is weird, indeed.
