We're not advertising on Google (or anywhere else), and the AdSense ads (the Google ads to the right) have nothing to do with our index position or search results. On Google, a complex combination of Page Rank, content, and URL determine a site's position on any given search term.

I know. I was refering to the spidering of the pages in the first place. AdSense works wonders for attracting google bots, from what I've seen. Many forums won't even get spidered without it, due to the session hash in the url.

No, it can't work that way. AdSense works by reviewing the content of a page, then filling in the text ad through their JavaScript. Since the text is generated from a JavaScript, a spidering engine such as the GoogleBot cannot "see" the dynamic text generated by the JavaScript... as most bots do not execute embedded JavaScripts, and the GoogleBot is one of them. Our biggest advantage is the lack of URL variables and the appearance of unique directories and pages for every single forum and thread/page on ATS. That's definitely a big help. The board soft I use (vBulletin) has just solved that problem with their latest update. Not only does it have acceptable url's, but also an archive. Having every page on google (among others) will definitely be a massive contribution to new traffic.

I'm betting that much of the traffic has to do with people looking for the beheading video. It's pretty well known that it's on the internet now. I heard it on the radio this morning.

Downplaying the significance of such an event is bad voodoo and defintiely not cool.
Milestones are hard enough to reach, but surpassing them on a monthly basis is without a doubt: a feat.

I wasn't meaning to downplay. I was merely noticing that it's a huge attraction ATM. The video link was working this morning. Now it's over-run with too many requests, and that was after they just put it on another server, with supposedly more bandwidth. It's kind of sick, but people are swarming the Inet to see it.

How do you get the inbound search records? Do you have a script that does that, or something? Just curious....I'd like to do that too.

It's part of the referring header, you need to do two things, make sure you're recording that in your server's log files, and use reporting software (we use Urchin) that can parse the results into a report.

That's a lot a peeps on... what are we feeding these people?

Hold on to your mice! Each hour today has been tracking with 80% more unique users and about 50% more page views. Already, with 11 hours of reports in the server's day, the numbers are a top-ten day. sheesh
