But if you are using a Proxy, would you ISP ever know you have connected to that site? Surely it'd be governed by the Proxy ISP and your own ISP will only ever know you have connected to the Proxy.

I've never heard of 4chan, I just went and checked it out, gotta say its pretty stupid, i don't think i will be revisiting that site anytime soon.

Its fairly ironic that At&t blocking this is probably going to result in the site getting a lot more hit's. Theirs no such thing as bad publicity when it comes to the internet right?

I will let you into a secret, you can contact your ISP and instate an account side (ISP side) block on ANY website or domain you want blocking on your account and yours alone. I have younger family members visit for extended periods of times and I talked with a representative of my ISP to get an account side block on any racial hatred and porn sites that they know off and sure enough the next day I had a test to see if it had occured and it had.

im guessing your meaning american ISP's will block a site at your request?> as i know here in the uk we dont do that. Its up to the EU (end user) to secure their computer/network and block sites they do not want opened .. this simply is not the job of the isp .. their are plenty of programs and processess people can action on their own to block sites.

(and for the record, i work for an isp .. quite a big one .. in uk of course)

Man, i just came from 4chan and they are still pretty steamed about the whole thing. I love Anonymous and the hive mind that all /b/ people act with.

Turns out that the block was only temporary. Related to some kind of DoS attack which was linked to 4Chan, or something.

Just as well -- if you're not a Web person you'll think I'm talking out of my posterior, but the b-tards at 4Chan are very smart, very tech-savvy, and very, very aggressive. They really are capable of giving ATT a bloody nose, if they're provoked.

Incidentally, we don't talk about them here. But the 4Chan army is really one of the shining lights in Libertarianism today, imho.

Provided that you trust your proxy, no, unless they sniff your data packets to analyze their content. If you want added privacy/security, you need an encrypted proxy. Then, only you and the proxy server will know what sites you have visited.

Feared Hackers Call Off Attack on AT&T

A rare moment of civility broke out on the Internet Monday, as the troublemaking geeks of 4chan.org called off a planned attack on telecommunications giant AT&T.

FOX News has some guts saying that they "called off" the attack on AT&T. Individuals will do how they please, and there may be a couple of posters who will still try to do something.

Some 4chan users blamed the DDoS attack on Anontalk.com, a Sweden-based online "bulletin board" that lets users post completely anonymously (as does 4chan) and which seems to be a frequent target of 4chan ire.

It appears that my assumption of AnonTalk may have been correct. I wonder if Anonymous will start to target AnonTalk now instead of AT&T.

Personally I'd like to see if they can actually do anything to AT&T or all the hype and credibility concerning there knowledge actually equates to anything. Really, can they genuinely be any substantial threat to the mega corporation?

This is one battle I'd like to see turn into a War, at least it wouldn't be countless innocents blood being spilt. Bring on the new age Wars.

There has always been limits on certain things, like pornography, in our society. The more in the open sites like these become, the more those powers will focus on them and limit them.

So if you REALLY wanted to support sites like ATS and the Internet as a whole, you wouldn't be defending sites like 4chan. It's sites like those that will cause the entire tower of cards to come tumbling down.

I only mentioned GTA because it is like 4chan in a way. It was that game in particular, that made certain groups and powers to start further watching, limiting, and rating games. Many games that might have been pretty cool, were watered down to meet some gamer rating so they could sell it to kids. It was GTA that spearheaded that attack on the gaming industry. Yelling "omg it's censorship!' won't stop them from limiting it at the end of the day.

And while some of you may be model parents, unless you put your kid in a bubble, you will not stop their accessing these sorts of sites. There are too many places and ways to do so now.

As mentioned, my main concern is not that they will censor me, but that they are trying to censor 4chan. Made that abundantly clear.

On the next two points, I would not be willing to assume that - because you are not in the know, or unable to find a site - does not demonstrate that anyone else is, or that it is the common condition.

If you honestly think 4chan is the vanguard of porn on the internet, I'm going to giggle a little. Because its silly. Very silly.

Again, as mentioned, I'm defending a principle not a specific site.

And I'm glad you admit that your GTA argument is unrelated. But the truth is that no one - not one single group - has succeeded in limiting GTA. They wanted to sell their game to discerning adults, and thats' exactly what they do now. Its not the creators fault if some parents don't care that their young child gets it. Much like you don't blame a gun manufacturer if a bad parent leaves a pistol on the table and a child uses it. You blame the bad parent.

I just recently saw one of those 'help the children' commercials, where you send money to extremely poor countries and try to help children by feeding them and clothing them.

The story was some 12 year old kid just watched both of his parents die (god knows what this kid has seen) and now he has to take care of his 4 younger siblings.. without a pot to piss in.

Not really related but what I am trying to get at, is there are hundreds of millions of people in this world surrounded by death, starvation, and the most horrible things imaginable.

And we are concerned about our children seeing a naked teenage girl, or a puppy getting blown up while sitting on their comfy chair on their computer.

4chan is all over this Fox News report. I can assure you that. it is not over. From what I have read, Fox is now drawing ire from the /b/tards for casting them in a negative light.

4chan has been under repeated DOS attacks as well. Someone really doesn't want that site to survive.

Well, here it is. No conspiracy here, folks. Go home.

Here's what happened:

For the past three weeks, 4chan has been under a constant DDoS attack. We were able to filter this specific type of attack in a fashion that was more or less transparent to the end user.

Unfortunately, as an unintended consequence of the method used, some Internet users received errant traffic from one of our network switches. A handful happened to be AT&T customers.

In response, AT&T filtered all traffic to and from our img.4chan.org IPs (which serve /b/ & /r9k/) for their entire network, instead of only the affected customers. AT&T did not contact us prior to implementing the block. Here is their statement regarding the matter.

In the end, this wasn't a sinister act of censorship, but rather a bit of a mistake and a poorly executed, disproportionate response on AT&T's part. Whoever pulled the trigger on blackholing the site probably didn't anticipate [nor intend] the consequences of doing so.

Beginning Friday, an AT&T customer was impacted by a denial-of-service attack stemming from IP addresses connected to img.4chan.org. To prevent this attack from disrupting service for the impacted AT&T customer, and to prevent the attack from spreading to impact our other customers, AT&T temporarily blocked access to the IP addresses in question for our customers. This action was in no way related to the content at img.4chan.org; our focus was on protecting our customers from malicious traffic.

Overnight Sunday, after we determined the denial-of-service threat no longer existed, AT&T removed the block on the IP addresses in question. We will continue to monitor for denial-of-service activity and any malicious traffic to protect our customers.

I hope so. I'd be happy enough if this had been a mistake or - at least - an ill-conceived decision that they're not going to stick with.

assuming that 4chan won this "battle", we could probably assume that the efforts to censor the internet have officially begun. the fight against censorship might have been a victory so far, but this is surely the beginning of a war to censor what we can view in the US.

I wonder what the next move will be for those who want to censor the only free place left? Could this site be a target soon? Maybe AT&T will get united with other corporations and start censoring several sites at once?

hopefully I'm just being paranoid, but I have a bad feeling that our internet access will be as restricted as China if people don't do anything against censorship next time a corporation strikes. We should all learn from 4chan, they have showed a sort of unity rarely seen these days in the virtual world.

Yeah there are periods when nothing special happens. It's entirely up to the users and the content changes fast.

the only thing i can see in there are the different subjects. nothing about the things you are talking about, and the IMG.4chan etc site doesn't work for me, so i can't see what you guys mean thats so bad about this site, unless someone shows me or something like that.
