I can't remember who said it but it went something like this.

"I completely disagree with what you are saying BUT I will die fighting for your right to say it"

I believe it was Voltaire.

And that's what this is about.

I'm a middleaged retired hacker who is currently thinking about getting a directional antena and rejoining the fight.

I can't wait to see how this plays out. I haven't been to 4chan in years but I think I may start dropping in again.

I can seem to access the forum just fine. I just went there because I wanted to see if my server blocked me from going there. I think this is against the law so legal action should be taken against ATNT. I can't imagine why they would want to get the most hard core nerds out there angry at them. That is a stupid move on their part in my opinion.

Indeed. Let's try to block some of the most uberhackers on the interweb, yeah good luck...

Dumb dumb dumb move if, in fact, this really is happening.

Oh well AT&T is going to get "wtfpwned"

It won't only be the 4chan b/tards but all of "Anon" who will march to war

The funny thing is that "anon" is the online version of fight club, so many everyday normal folk who commit their virtual terrorism against the evil corporate opressors.

Warning!:
NEW DEVELOPMENT: Moot apparently has retracted his statement that Cogent Communications has blacklisted 4chan COMPLETELY. Reddit has just removed the story from the homepage. This isn't normal, it had 3000+ up votes. Probably removed due to lolsuit threat by AT&T. 4Chan is currently down for reasons unknown, possible DDoS attack. Confirmed by myg0t: AnonTalk. Conspiracy?

6:15am est. I was just on 4chan.. and I looked at the r9k board. Just a bunch of chat... I saw nothing anyone (except some deranged bible thumper) would get upset about. Can't imagine why ATnT would bother with blocking it.

much worse stuff on tube8 or nothingtoxic or any number of other similar stupid sites.

Parenting.

Censorship Bad. I would use longer words and phrases, but I'm thinking you're probably not going to be able to follow a more complex argument.

Slippery slope. First they block the sites YOU don't like, so that not too many people complain, then they go another step and block more sites that are not overly popular, and then more and more and more until the internet is no longer a free domain, but in the hands of the corporate and government few.

Creeping censorship.

The internet is the last refuge of the free, where the Corporate and Government MSM do not have the monopoly.

We lost the television and radio to the TPTB and MSM, and they want all of the internet next, where a free exchange of ideas and information, uncensored, is still found.

No, 4chan may not be your or my cup of tea, and there are those who wish it was not in existence, but realise that this blocking is a slow and creeping form: the situation of placing the frog in a pan of water and gradually heating the water until boiling point. By the time the frog realises it, it is dead.

Censorship of sites will not happen quickly, if it did, if the frog was just put in boiling water, it would jump out in protest.

What is wrong with people.
Stop whinging and do the obvious, cancel your service, don't be scared by the word contract because you never signed a legitimate standing contract binding you by law nor did you sign a make belief contract that said you are happy for them to act as your net nanny.
Cancel your service and explain exactly why, don't be scared by threatening letters of breaking a contract or any such nonsense because it wouldn't stand up in court for a second.

Once they realise their customers aren't a pushover they will have no choice but to fix the problem or they lose money, pretty basic marketing knowledge really, if they don't fix the problem then that's not your problem because you aren't with them anymore.

If you are one of their customers and crying about this but don't intend to actually do anything about it (you know, like the armchair investigating conspiracy theorists that complain on the internet to each other but still put up with the crap because they won't do anything outside their PC screen) then more fool you and you deserve all the censoring and nannying you are getting and will get.

As a /b/tard, I can tell you that this angers me greatly. Yeah, there is some bad stuff on /b/, but totally blocking it altogether is wrong, and there is no reason to block /r9k/ as well. Yes, we are planning retaliation, but obviously not DDOS'ing like we usually do. We just want to make a PR nightmare for them by getting this story out as fast as possible.

From what I've read about this AT&T were just blocking the site because of the DDoS attack I actually think they might have really been doing 4chan a favour from the look of the situation.

It seems now AT&T have backed down the DDoS resumed and the site is inaccessible to everyone not that I really want to go there I have browsed it on occasion because I like the humour of a lot of the content but that's mostly outweighed by the vulgarity of other images there.

Some really funny stuff comes from 4chan and similar sites OK the humours a bit warped but so is mine but yes if you aren't prepared to see some sick pictures of corpses and worse stay well away.

I'm only guessing the reason for the downtime it could just be the slashdot effect as mentioned earlier time will tell.

good 4chan is gross. they are nothing but a bunch of physco aspie stalkers. They hack accounts, post chld porn and ruin lives by posting personal information. I wish all isp's would block it.

Dont like it? get another provider. Thats the freedom you have.

On further thought, I feel compelled to add that I don't believe the internet is something to which there are "degrees of freedom". It is either free, or it is not. Some say 4chan is the gutter of the internet. Perhaps. But it is our gutter none the less, and any attack on them - advocates of freedom, even if they don't express it in a way you personally enjoy - is most sincerely an attack on every single internet user; not least those of us on ATS who follow news that I'm sure the mainstream would see just as happily swept aside as they would see 4chan.

How many degrees removed do you think we are from them in the eyes of such megacorporations? How easily marginalized are conspiracy theorists? If you've been paying attention to how the mainstream news portrays us then you already know the answer. If this turns into a pattern then - my friends - we will be on the list of "sooner", not "later".

I don't have the skills with a computer necessary to help them, but even though I hold no personal affection for them? I'm going to be spreading the word about this to everyone I know. If 4chan's plan is to make this a PR nightmare for AT&T, then I'm going to help in my own meagre way.

This could turn out to be a big nothing, or it could be a test.

Take a small step, gauge reactions, back off, take notes. Take another step but take precautions based on the notes you took last time, gauge reactions, take notes........... You know, give them some rope and let them hang themselves. If they are as smart as some people claim then they should be able to see this type of thing coming.

AT&T may be a bunch of crooks but attacking them may be considered attacking infrastructure and thus a terrorists act. This could bring a bunch of alphabet agencies down upon 4chan, which might be the long term plan. If they want to censor the internet, these types of groups will have to be taken out first.

You know how it would play out in the MSM.... AT&T is attempting to protect the children from internet scum and these terrorists hackers retaliated and now "something must be done", you know, to protect the children.
