While I am for the right to own a gun, what would the OP have done if he had been armed in this situation anyways?
Draw your gun when you saw the thug pointing his gun at you and shot him?
Stay still, let the second one search you, in which he obviously steals your gun, and let them get away?
Just shoot them when you first saw them because they looked sketchy?

In this situation? I don't know. I guess whatever the classes i'm going to take would teach me to do. Probably nothing, give them what they want, walk away and call the police. It's other situations where my life could actually be threatened, and the very real presence of those situations that have prompted me to take actions to prepare myself for any threat i can.

Facing my mortality was scary, but i'm thankful for it now. Maybe it's one of those things you have to experience to understand, but i want to have more control over my fate than worthless scum with a gun.

Ok, I will break it down for you.

He saw them run towards him, that is when you draw your weapon
but do not point it directly at them.

If they do not stop and or you see them reach for their weapon
you aim and open fire, in my state you are supposed to say
you feel your life is in danger and hope the thug realizes he
is about to be ventilated.

If you can sidestep behind hard cover at any point that would be a good
idea or dropping to present the smallest profile if you can shoot accurately
in the position.

If you are not a very good shot aim center mass or a little lower
based on your experience shooting.

In this scenario most petty thugs will run and look for easier prey
once they see the gun out and you holding it in a trained manner.

congrats on making it out ok. and a bigger congrats on deciding to take your personal safety in your own hands.

nowthen, where you failed is what the others said, and that is your situational awareness. after a while awareness of your surroundings becomes second nature, things i do now without thinking are, sit with my back to the wall in restaurants , take a look through the windows of the conveince store BEFORE entering. (how many times have you seen a surveillance vid of a robbery and customers unknowingly stumble into and armed robbery in progress?) take a quick glance behind me while walking to and from my car in a parking lot, etc.

good luck in the future, may you never need to use your firearm in self defense.
