You may also want to look at this if you are truely serious.

Link

As for just buying a ship, I would recommend against it. You would need fuel to run the ship, a system to keep the ship stationary (would require fuel or a generator), a place to grow food (unless you plan on buy it all, no wildlife on the ship), I could go on and on but I wont lol. Probably would cost more then you would want too just for the isolation.

Awesome...thank you for the link.

If I decide to go that far south, I think I might try to build me an igloo.

If you go work for them, they will teach you how to build one for real. They require you take an Antarctic survival course as part of your time there. Normally people go for either 4 months or 8 months, the mental/physical criteria for going during the 8 month winter is pretty stringent though (you cannot get out if anything happens to you).

Very neat place to work, and you can come back and tell us all about lake Vostok, Stargates, hidden Nazi bases, etc…

I never knew that, I will have to check into that. I'm used to the cold so I wouldn't mind leaving in an igloo. After I finish college I will have plenty of time to go down there for training. I understand that if anything happens to me then that's it because of the lack resources there. But I'm willing to take that chance.

I suppose you could live on a yacht and sail the seas. Countries only own/have rights to a couple of miles of their coasts. So, if youre in the middle of the ocean, no one owns you or what youve got. You'l have to fish to live though...

I was also looking into this as well, but from a different perspective.

I think that it's highly impractical to live completely off the grid, for reasons already mentioned (no free places or they're rather unhospitable). So you might wanna move to the countryside and start organising yourself under the radar.

It's not like nobody's done it so far
and I'm sure in the States there are tons of places that are in the middle of nowhere and you are practically on your own.

Myself, I was thinking along the lines of creating a mini-community that employs the latest advances in all fields related to sustainability (energy, water, housing, cleaning, living habits).

In fact I've taken this up as a research project and it's something that I would very much like to take to an academic level (a PhD and an academic career would be nice, assuming the world is roughly similar after the next few years
.

The problems will start when our greedy overlords catch wind of our creations and start coming around asking for money. So, I would also recommend doing a lot of legal research on how you go about creating your Utopia, so that you don't get any fat guys in suits around your front door asking for royalties.

If you guys are interested, I could post some of the links that I found more interesting. (of course, if you have something to share as well, I won't complain)

... in a tent.

staying off of the grid and settling in somewhere don't exactly mix. ask any fugative. you'd probably have to become nomadic to maintain anonymity.

join the rainbow family thing. hope you like patchouli oil.

if you have kids... forget it. you're locked in unless qualified to home-school after 7th grade level. (state sanctioned education requirements)

of course if you can manage to get under the radar and stay there, then it shouldn't matter.

the middle of the desert is out if you're trying to stay out from under a satellite. so, you'll need to find a spot with some canopy.

I've also thought about this.

Building a community, including people with various skills (Builders, Plumbers, Electricians, Seamstresses, Vetenarians, Carpenters, Doctors etc) that BE the community and would work for each other for free. Everyone would grow their own foods, some specialising in certain things, and trade them with each other.

I've not thought about it at PHD level though, it's just a pipe dream...

I have the same dream....it is an obsession with me really....I think this ideal is what we will hopefully have the chance and CHOICE to settle into on more of a large scale finally after the SHTF and has settled and been cleaned up etc...... getting into a community closer to that is what we have done ahead of time....just a bit like that.....I am beginging to wonder if putting down roots will have to be for AFTER crap settles....for now I am fully loading my camper, with seeds and edible growing veggies and fruits etc, and keep going camping as regularily as humany possible, so if we have any "forced" camping it won't seem like much of a difference to us etc.....

I wish it were that simple.... just buy a package of documents, sign, seal, deliver!

I would be on that 36 years ago on the day I was born.....I never choose any human governments etc...

I guess that's why we pray for Gods Kingdom to come......because mans sucks tennis balls...

Plus, mans govenment tries to impose itself on you against your will, at least with that God guy it is your own choice to make...

I wish I wasn't so opposed to religion, because I do like the God guys kingdom idea..... everyone just govern themselves by showing love and repect to others etc....

I DO think we are headed that way eventually though!

I just think mans govenrmnet BS needs to fall away naturally first, to be replaced appropriatly.... by everryone growing up and stop trying to control, oppress, and dominate others anymore etc.

Is there actually a place, or Island, where one can live and not have to worry about paying taxes or the government?

Some times when all the MSM, Alex Jones, and Glen beck fear mongering gets to me I find my self asking " I need to just get away with my family and not worry about the world, no rent, no taxes, no POLICE! But I would still like internet access though"

So, I was just curious if anyone knew of such a place or where one can create their own Utopia?

There is a place, but you wouldn't know of it because whomever finds it, tells no one about it. They are completely cut off from the outside world, and of course, would not post it on the internet.

The Tepui in Venezuela are so remote the Venezualans don't even visit it. You'd have to bring a herd of pack mules with supplies but it could be done. If you set up some solar power thing you might could have internet.

The only place i can think of would be to buy a old freighter (ship)and anchor it or place a old oil drilling platform on a sea-mount somewhere in the ocean in international waters.

With wind turbines and solar for power and someone to bring supplies you would be out of everyone but the UNs jurisdiction.

I would find a place that i could get a fiberoptics cable run to for the internet and run a off shore banking and host internet sites.

Piratebay and other companies like it might want someplace out side the jurisdiction of any country to base there operations.

You might be able to flag ships from your site too.

Principality of Sealand
en.wikipedia.org...
www.sealandgov.org...

In January 2007, The Pirate Bay attempted to buy Sealand, after harsher copyright measures in Sweden forced it to look for a base of operations elsewhere.[16] The deal fell through.
Sealand has been involved in several commercial operations, including the issuing of coins and postage stamps, and the establishment of an offshore Internet hosting facility or "data haven".

If the govt don't get you on land, the vast amount of pirates out on the open sea will

I'm being facetious though...I have no solution bar getting out into the deepest most uninhabited land you can find, then again, maybe no govt but probably no food either.
