Area 51 is a testing facility, so it will be needed. The F-22 is a Cold War Relic that is very expensive and not needed. None of the services want the jet, only Congress as it is a nice pork project.

Secretary Gates is looking at the budget to increase the number of personnel and to get rid of duplicated systems. There is a lot of waste in the DoD, and most of that is for Congress members pet projects.

Some posters here really are shoeing the true ignorance of Area 51. The base has been plenty active. Brand new hangars being built. The whole compound expanding through out the years, proven by satellite imagery. Why has the biggest hangar in area 51 JUST been built? Along with doubling the size of the runway.....

sorry folks, area 51 is alive and well..

The defense budget is actually increasing. Secretary Gates is getting rid of some unneeded weapons systems and building up other ones. While the F-22 Raptor is being cut, the F-35 Lightning (JTF) is getting the go ahead. It will actually create more jobs in doing so.

As stated previously, Area 51 is a test facility, and it is not going anywhere.
