The president of Mexico received one of the more unusual gifts given by the Queen during an incoming state visit today - a copy of the classic dystopian novel 1984.

At Buckingham Palace, Felipe Calderon was presented with a first edition of George Orwell's nightmarish book, which tells of a totalitarian regime and coined the concept Big Brother.

The Royal Household seeks guidance from the staff of incoming VIPs when deciding what to offer during the official exchange of gifts.

A Palace spokeswoman said: "Apparently the president really admires George Orwell."

Those wealthy tyrants/crazy world-leaders are not only fans of the novel, 1984. They're the inspiration behind Eric Arthur Blair's (Orwell's true name) villains in that disturbing tale. Don't be surprised if the fiat-royal families have copies of the novel, Brave New World in their libraries.



There's plenty of falsified information about the author of 1984. You can blame the infamous government, military (or just MI5) for editing, concealing, or even destroying much of his records before & after he died.

It's a little painful to think that for every person reading that book as a warning of things to come there is another reading it as a "how-to" manual.

I don't care WHAT the explanation is. He has many other books that are out there for gifting. The simple fact that they chose 1984 speaks VOLUMES. Sure, that's coming from a CTers point of view but come on people. This is a blatant statement. A "welcome to the family" kind of gift.

Ah the delicious irony- you realy can't make this stuff up.

Its also interesting that if you now walk around George Orwell's old house in London your image is now captured on surveillance camera over 33 times.

Kinda like giving him a pamphalet to see if he wants to join? They are starting to get a little blatant with the stuff. I have never held any credence to the NWO aspect of CT, however I must say I am paying attention a tad more to that particualr part of the forum.

While the gift is a bit creepy, it is a far more thoughtful one that some DVD's or an ipod with show tunes! A first edition book is a nice gift.....so now they can take lessons from an original. Or perhaps it was a warning that the US is going to swallow them and Canada up in the NAU.
