I believe the explanation is that they use some form of 'warp-drive' engines, sort of like in star trek. Instead of moving the ship, you move the
space around it, thus you never have to accelerate the ship to a level where inertia becomes a problem. It also allows you to exceed the speed of
light without breaking the laws of physics, and lets you travel at high speeds without experiencing time-dilation.
Either that or they use some form of gravitational field that keeps all atoms in the ship centered relative to the ship's acceleration and direction
of force.
