Defence chiefs ordered RAF pilots to 'shoot down UFOs'

The RAF has tried to shoot down UFOs under instructions by the Ministry of Defence, a former employee has revealed.

Pilots have took aim at Unidentified Flying Objects several times but failed to bring them down, Nick Pope claimed.

Mr Pope, who worked on the MoD's UFO section for three years, said the 'shoot down' directive had been in place since the 1980s.

'We know of cases where the order has been given to shoot down — with little effect to the UFO,' Mr Pope said.

Firing at UFOs was 'not automatic but happens when something in our airspace is deemed to be a threat' he said.

'In the case of UFOs, whether the object is causing a threat is very much a (pilot’s) judgment call,' he told the paper.

Mr Pope, a 43-year-old Londoner, said the rules of engagement were drawn up after dozens of encounters with unidentified craft.

He said: 'There was a faction in the MoD who said "We want to shoot down a UFO and that will resolve the issue one way or another".'

Mr Pope, who worked as a civil servant at the MoD for 21 years, claimed that witnesses had given statements about dozens of near-misses between UFOs and planes, RAF jets and police helicopters.

But details of such incidents would never be released, he said.

'The public won’t know unless it comes down in a heavily-populated area,' he said.

'I do believe we will bring one down. We’re developing increasingly sophisticated weapons.'

Mr Pope said the government has no way of knowing if the UFOs pose a threat because the cases are never fully investigated.

'They will try to play it down by talking about flying saucers and little green men. But there are MPs and ministers and a faction of the MoD who do believe in UFOs,' he added.

The MoD has refused to comment on Mr Pope's claims or the existence of any UFO-related directives.

Well whether this is true or not I dont think we should have a "shoot down" policy do you? Have there ever been any cases where a UFO has fired on us? I cant think of any, so this shoot at will policy is wrong, we should only shoot them down if they attack.
No wonder no alien has landed or said hi, hed get shot down and he knows it.

Its very big of us to even think we can shoot these things down, do you not think theyd be able to shut our weapons systems off, I know they've done it with war heads and main computers in the past.

I think we sometimes get ahead of ourselves, pre plan what the aliens aims are and so we decide its just easier to shoot them down. I reckon they could take us all out if they really wanted to, but they havent so I will give them a little trust before I decide to start shooting them down.

This makes me chuckle.

I saw a report recently about Unidentified craft in the skies over the UK, and the MoD stated that they only investigate if there is deemed to be a threat.

Well, I would have thought that for an organization charged with protecting the skies of our nation, anything flying in it without being identified is a threat!

Lets see...
1. There are witnesses.
2. It's big enough to cause considerable damage if it crashed.
3. It's not one of ours.
4. It has lights of some kind, therefore power.
5. It moves as if controlled intelligently.

Yeah, I'd say those are all signs of a threat.

If the MoD were not so stupid in their denials I'd have a little respect for them. The fact that they expect people to believe what they say on this matter is actually quite insulting.

If Nick Pope says we have a shoot to kill policy on ITN then I believe we do.

However how can we have a shoot to kill on something that they dont even admit is real? I dont recall a statement from the MOD saying UFOs are real, yet we've jumped to a press release that they are to be shot down! What happened to the middle part of disclosure

almost like no-ones willing to put there hand up and say 'yes we know they are real' for fear of rebuttle but have a plan in place just incase

Exactly....only we could do this. Someone needs to ask them why they are shooting at stuff that technically does not exist. Plus say they did shoot one down, how are they to explain it crash landing in the middle of Kent say? The whole thing is just wierd and whacky.
