Years before the U.S. Army will deploy its active protective system for armored vehicles, a Russian firm has unveiled a weapon designed to thwart it.

The RPG-30 fires a tandem-charge rocket-propelled grenade immediately after launching a decoy warhead in an adjoining tube, according to a Nov. 19 article by ITAR-TASS, the Russian news agency. The decoy is meant to distract an active protective system like the Army's Hard Kill and the Israeli Trophy so that the tandem charge can land a one-two punch against modern armor. Its developer, Moscow-based Basalt, has completed development and testing and will begin deliveries to Russian and other militaries in coming months, the news service reported.

"It has a standard 105mm tandem warhead, but what the difference is it has a decoy or a dummy charge that fires a few seconds ahead of the main warhead," said Jonathan Pruiksma, an intelligence specialist with the Army's TRADOC Intelligence Support Activity (TRISA), Wargaming, Experimentation, Test and Evaluation Directorate. "It is basically a prototype and they [the Russians] are advertising designed to defeat explosive reactive armor and active protection systems."

Pretty disturbing. I've seen pictures of it, not sure how exactly it would help succeed in overwhelming the APS when the decoy is so close to the real rocket propelled grenade.

I guess in the second image the decoy goes up ahead with the real warhead behind causing the APS to react to the decoy and then the real warhead comes in, too soon for the APS to react again.

Yeah, it is ingenious off the Russians and it is quite cheap too!

Even iff you have APS and ERA, your tank still will be defeated. What a nightmare that will be for tank-designers...

Ya more of the same garbage that was going on during the cold war, one side develops something, the other develops something to coutner it, the other side builds something to counter the counter..etc etc etc...

..get the feeling the cold war didnt really end?

Well that assumption would be correct...to a point. Its just not called that anymore.

Cheers!!!!

The reactive armor is metal plate with modular explosive charges on the outside. This can be bolted on and is replaceable with hand tools. It detonates on impact to disperse the plasma jet of a HEAT (high explosive anti tank) round.
The rpg decoy is not actually a "decoy" it is a initiator for the reactive charge. The main round follows it to the same spot and destroys the steel plate or chobam that was below the reactive plate.
It is a low tech solution that might work out pretty well.
Ingenuous.

except that this is designed to dafeat active systems - the russians have been fielding active atgm systems for many years now:

the next stage they are working on (and in an advance stage) is anti-APFSDS *long rod* system.

the russians actually had Drozd fitted to there T-72`s at the height of the cold war , to counter the mobile ATGM jeeps

No, that's what the tandem charge is for - defeating REACTIVE armor.

The decoy is there to beat the ACTIVE armor component, ie short-range interceptors like FCLAS. - www.defense-update.com...

See blog.wired.com... which expalines it all.

Reactive armor has been around for years, the US has not even fielded an active system yet, and the Russians are ready to beat it.
