Pakistan moves on Mumbai accused

news.bbc.co.uk

Pakistan has put an Islamic militant leader accused of having links to the Mumbai attacks under house arrest, reports say.

The cleric, Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, has been accused of heading the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, which India says planned and carried out the attacks.

Pakistan has denied any involvement in the attacks, which killed at least 170 in Mumbai (Bombay) last month.

These moves are undoubtedly aimed at dampening international speculation over possible involvement of the Pakistani government in the Mumbai attacks, and resulting tensions between India and Pakistan.

It seems Pakistan would have little to gain from any direct government involvement. If anything, the attacks only provided a pretext for moves against Pakistani interests.

As long as the group in question is not actually being scapegoated perhaps we can hope this latest move will reduce tensions in the region.
