If I gotta rely upon intellect and smarts... I'm done for. Cunning is more my speed... Guess I'll just hide in the corner of my hiding spot and rock back and forth

I'm not technically savy and I have a feeling that may be the downfall of a lot of great survivors like myself. I hope I'm wrong.

Naw, you just need to find a guy around your area that's good with communication. I would be willing to bet he needs someone for security.... Groups work better than lone people in some situations.

Haven't tried it yet but I was thinking of merging a crank / solar / battery emergency radio / flashlight with a walkie-talkie so as to have a crank / solar / battery walkie-talkie. Not really secure but it would solve the need for electricity if the SHTF. A few minutes cranking on the radio gives you 10-15 minutes of radio / flashlight.

Very goood point. And they do have them. But again, is that risking your safety by talking open channel like that?

I think I'll just be on CB Channel 3 and invite anyone. When I stat throwing around RPGs people might get the point *lmao*

We could always use smoke signals
Ya know, back in ww2, we used a native american language for secret communications. I think it was Navajo, but i'm not sure. Well anyways, neither the Germans, nor the Japanese ever broke the code. We could use that idea as a starting point.

Just some food for thought

I like it! But I think it's a bit too bland for ATS... We should do something more along the lines of ESP or something shouldn't we?

It would be easier if we were all telepath's. Unfortunately most people are too close-minded to learn anything like that. And most people don't use enough of their brains. The average person only uses 15% of their brain.

I'd love to become a telepath... But I haven't read Telepaths For Dummies yet...

I want to open a discussion about how communication will take place when the SHTF. CB? Short Wave? Morse Code?

I would to add a important form of communication that has been forgotten for many years. Stubblefield and Bane was communicate using a “earth battery”, sounds crazy but even Tesla used it a various forms. Using this type communication whether it be code or voice would be hard to trace. The information on this type of is getting next to impossible to find! Hope this helps!

Great input! I know nothing about this. Are there recievers to build? How would you ensure that others would be able to listen in?

I'm afraid my small network of survivalists and preppies can not afford fancy theories or gadgets, apart from some CBs and Ham kit we are going to rely on dead letterbox drops and regular RZs at fixed dates and locations to stay in touch with each other.

All very good ideas! I assume you all are in the area and I was trying to bring the highs and lows of all communications type out in this discussion and what you broght up are great ways for people in the same area. WOuld you like to explain to some who might not know what you are taking about it...?

Serpently
)
CB =short range radio up to 8 miles
Ham = Amateur radio system (not using repeaters) up to 40 miles
Dead letter drop = pre arranged and agreed location where you can leave messages and letter for others to pick up as and when needed, A physical notice board for want of a better description, often found at RZ's
RZ= Rendezvous, Agreed and pre arranged meeting place where on a set time, place and location, each wek or month survivalists and preppies can gather to barter, trade, socialise, share intel, etc usually a radius of not more than 100 miles is feasable.
On top of that there is always the courier concept, IE a postman who only travels between retreats and secure locations.

The Rz concept was snaffled from my American colleagues who in turn snaffled it from the Mountainmen of the 1800s who met up twice a year at RZs to trade beaver pelts and to restock, booze, whore about and trade before going back up into the hills.

Stubblefield and Bain around the world or rather thru the world a few home made coils! I have information on these if anyone is interested (no charge) and I will setup the download links from media fire. Please do a little reading on this to see if it is worth trying for you.

Anibus has a point..power..do you have the ability to get the necessary power to send out a signal of any type.

Hams do have a special category of transmission type called QRP. This means running low power to get the signal out. Usually this is done with Morse Code. The type of antenna and the effeciency of the rest of the set up has alot to do with success. This is usually done under the rules with less than 5 watts of power. This means you dont need alot of battery or generator power to do this.

It will also help to know how to construct antennas from simple materials.

As Samuel Morse said in the first message..

.-- .... .- - .... .- - .... --. --- -.. .-- .-. --- ..- --. .... -

What Hath God Wrought

Thanks,

This begs the question of what SHTF situation X are you talking about in regards to communications in the first place.

Would the mail even work in a true situation X?

Okay, now what.

Would like more info on the earth battery. In just looking, seems you need a wire from point a to point b, am I missing anything?

The transmitter QRP radio can be built to fit inside a 9V battery casing and use 1 cell from the battery, 1.5V, to reach out several hundred miles. This has been confirmed more than several times. You do need to know Morse code.

The receiver can be anything that picks up the frequency your expecting your answer from.

What i worry about in this situation is that the people from this community are pretty far apart...and using a radio in such conditions , distance etc would definetly be a problem...plus with today's technology im sure it wouldn't be that hard to intercept. As for internet ..i doubt wed still have this privilege in those days...or who knows..
