Why is the new first family so darn tacky?

I never once noticed what anyone, involved in the election process, from any party was wearing. I did check out Mrs Palin, once the news hit about the price of her clothes, but only for a minute.
I never noticed any thing about the dress of the Obamas during the acceptance speech.
I never judge a book by its cover.

Interesting . . . five pages on whether or not the First Family Elect is appropriately dressed or not, complete with a link to how Vanity Fair feels about that, along with a ton of posts on past First Families and their fashion foiables.

I'm going to step out on a limb here and opine that this is a symptom of the ill in this country right now, and part of the reason we're in such a mess.

It has become so important to follow the road laid by others to have an xl-sized house, the latest greatest fashions (as dicated by those who make the damn clothes), a car accessorized to the nth degree and stuff a plenty, all to give the appearance of . . . well . . . what those who drive the crass commercialistic side of society wants us to be, all while emptying our wallets and running up the charge cards to their benefit.

I guess it can best be summed as the First Family Elect really does not adequately represent, to some, the Dancing With The Stars society that we've come to emulate.

With that, and in four years, I guess they'll be voted off the island.

I would prefer the world to judge my country by the intent of our actions. Here we seem caught up in the look but I suspect much of the world isn't.

I can't see many others in the world being so concerned over dress code and hair when the real threat they face is bombs, bullets and exploitation of their country. Fashion should be the least of our worries at this time but of course it is not. Why face the real problem.

This thread is a parody right? It has to be.

Especially the part about Michelle Obama having to "watch her spending" because they only had a net worth of $800,000. haha!! Poor people that only have $800,000 of net worth!

As far as I can tell they seem to be dressing just fine. And for every person who's saying "where did the cornrows go" there's going to be another saying "thank god they got rid of those cornrows".

Personally, I'd rather see the president and his family be a bit modest. Might do our country some good as far as public image is concerned if the rest of the world doesn't think we're all rich lunatics who care more about style than we do about people.

Let me start by saying, I am not an Obama fan. I have to say, I understand your logic of thinking here, but, there have been many woman throughout history that didn't "dress the part", but were extrodinary woman. OK, so she doesn't have style. Oh well. Doesn't mean she can't do the job as the first lady. Let me say it again. I am NOT an Obama fan. Not to get off complete subject here, but, I DID LIKE how you said black american and NOT african american. I Thank you for that. Nothing is more irritating to me when people say african american.

I'd like to see them in jogging outfits and tennis shoes. That's what I wear. I even sleep in it so when I wake up I am already dressed except for the skate shoes.

This is just another way to attack Obama, as people are running out of ideas. We'll have to wait until he has been in office a few months, and then these folks will be set, and be able to really dig their teeth and claws into any decision he makes, telling us what an evil, wicked, horrible person he is.

With a lack of ammo, they are really digging for insults. On the mother.. and the children.. how sad it has fallen that low. I think they are dressed fine. Keep in mind, Obama owns ONE home.. as opposed to the 13 McCain owns. Keep in mind perhaps they DO shop at Wal-Mart.. versus the overspending of thousands like Palin did at Neiman Marcus, at the expense of her campaign. I'd rather have a President and a family that is more centered on OUR lives, rather than living in their own world, completely oblivious how the other half lives.

Perhaps we should be pleased that the first family is NOT about spending cash on things like designer clothes. And perhaps you should worry more about what they will do for our country, than worried that some fashion guru in a foreign country might not 'approve' of her wardrobe. You are truly ignorant, if you feel that we are going to lose face with the world or unable to complete treaties or deals with countries, because of how they dress. They look clean, they look nice, they look like everybodies family on any sunday or get-together. Pity you feel they should look like they are part of fashion week in NYC.
