You guys are fantastic. That is the story. I've been after that for at least 25 years. And guess what - Harry Dean Stanton is in the version I remembered. Just found a clip on youtube.

Here's another one I need found. It was b&w and it was about a huge dinosaur that fought the army and it had rays that came out of it's belly and killed them. I'm quite old and I saw this when I was very wee, so the movie must be absolutely ancient. And I don't think it was Godzilla..
