This is the oldest trick in the book. CERN realizes that there are people who do not like this atom smashing idea and the amount of money that was spent on it. And that whatever the result, it will likely not change anything for the average person.


So... By giving the people a chance to somehow get involved and have a say in the name for this machine, they're hoping to eliminate some of the hatred. Anyone with decent social skills could see right through this bs.
