"The Herd"

Well I would be curious to see how the usual horde of "IT'S ONLY ROCKS" crowd deals with this one

Looks like a herd of critters being guided by a single one off to the left

Here is the original Malin image in full size non mapped gif version

Malin Space Systems: R1901066

In any case this is one of the weirdest Barsoomian images I have ever seen

After looking at the full size image you linked to, I would hazard a guess at sand dunes of some decription or other.

I can see what you mean though at first glance it does look like a heard of martian cattle making there way across the plains, I bet they would make for a great tasting steak

It makes me think of ice balls of some form. The spring idea is good... perhaps those are springs that have frozen.

But... what I find most intriguing is... what are the things that do look like trees of some sort.

And yes... I am a rock person. You have found something that doesn't look like a rock.

Why are some of those *things* seperate and others merged if you see what i mean...some merging into the back of others...im betting geological phenomena...but hopefully i can be proven wrong.

Maybe it's Mr. and Mrs. Pacman and their family in search of alien ghosts.
Pretty neat stuff

I go for sand dunes.

unless said animals are modular and can absorb into each other to form a giant anthropomorphic version of themselves to fight giant robots.

I don't believe that any of those things are sand dunes, not naturally occurring ones anyway. There are photos on marsanomalyresearch.com of the same type of "dunes" but they have other strange things about them, such as "antennae" and other anomalies.

Ewwww......they almost look like ticks after they have had their full.

If it were animals or whatever herding you would probably see at least some sort of foot traffic(game trail) left behind.I agree with another poster herein that it is probably sand dunes.

it's some kind of dunes and I think the spring theory is correct... this is upwelled frost of some kind, it's powderish because you can see the indents from the direction the wind is blowing...

But this is the best organics I have seen since the trees

something is obviously growing from within them... you see the same effect in the Trees... where it appears as if sinkholes led to water coming to the surface and in these spots living things can still grow...

certainly organic matter justting through...

I honestly doubt the possibility of them being dunes. They seem too spread, dunes tend to move like waves in an ocean. These appear to be all over the place with large areas of flat land in between, I don't know what they are, but neither does anyone else here.

It's just what they appear to be from what we can see.

Dunes sounds good.

Note the dark brush stroke type markings. They are most visible in the upper third of the image. Apparently prevailing wind direction is from the upper right to the lower left of the image. Where the markings are most visible, they seem to originate from the dark areas on the dunes (if that's what they are). This would be consistent with the dark matter (what ever it is) being blown off of the dunes. They do bear a resemblance to these martian dunes:

Looked like domiciles in the snow to me, yet it does have the 'feel' of lifeforms. What the....

Lets just send some private satellites up and have a real look see.

Nice find Zorgon. To all the folks giving mundane explanations such as sand dunes or frost, perhaps you can link to pics of the exact phenomenon on this planet where we also have sand and frozen water.

I do not believe this is an alien life form, but I cannot see a sand dune field. Here on Earth we don't form entire fields of separate sand dunes like that so I am puzzled as sand seems to be the easiest explanation.
The splotchy dark portions are absent from satellite photographs of Earths sandy regions as well.
