Hi and welcome to is that racist, I'm your host Roland of Gilead.

In this thread we will be reviewing a variety of different clips and images and discuss whether or not we think they are racist.

Feel free to post your own clips and images if you would like those to be discussed as well.

I will post the first clip to get the ball rolling.

Bugs pretends to be slave and begs Yosemite Sam not to beat him.

IS THAT RACIST?

My thoughts.

No. The cartoonist was obviously lampooning southern culture. And simply REFERENCING slavery isn't racist.

I think those that claim this is racist is because Bugs is portraying a black person as if he were a white person in black face and is a minstrel. Both of these stereotypes are often offensive in the black community.

LOL.
God, watching these cartoons as a kid you wouldve never noticed that lol.
I think its TOTALLY racist!
Whites werent slaves back then, bugs' body was painted a brown color
Even abe lincoln, who freed the blacks from slavery came into play.
Bugs even started crawling on the ground with a black-styled accent to his voice.
Highly racist in my opinion, but it was probably made around the time when blacks were still fighting for their rights and racism was a huge problem.
My input anyway!

Ok, what?

Kind of off topic and uncalled for don't you think?

anyways,
I'm not saying its not insensitive.. it obviously is.. and it is a caricature of black people.. That alone doesn't make it racist though.. Cartoons by definition involve caricatures of different races ALL the time and often poke fun at those races..

Um, my flag represents pride of my country.
Now if I had my flag spitting on your flag, yes that is racist.
My flag alone is not racist by any means.
Anyway, the name of this thread is "Is that racist?" I stated my opinion on the current subject. Never was my flag a subject in this topic, and you are now an idiot for having said that.

Either reply to the topic at hand or dont reply at all. Thanks.

Well let's see, Buggs is a what? a rabbit? and what else? a cartoon?

Ok remembering that bugs is a cartoon rabbit. let's move on.

As we can see from Yosemittie Sam's costume this is a period piece taking place durring the civil war. Durring the civil war there was rampant racism going on on both sides.

So is the cartoon itself racist? No, was the time period racist? Yes. Bugs being colored differently doesnt make a bit of difference. Bugs being a cartoon rabbit has no actual race, hes a rabbit.
